After a chance meeting on a train platform, a married doctor (Trevor Howard) and a suburban housewife (Celia Johnson) enter into a muted but passionate, ultimately doomed, love affair. With its evocatively fog-enshrouded setting, swooning Rachmaninoff score, and pair of remarkable performances (Johnson was nominated for an Oscar for her role), David Lean’s film of Noël Coward’s play Still Life deftly explores the thrill, pain, and tenderness of an illicit romance, and has influenced many a cinematic brief encounter since its release.

Release Notes on Restoration
Brief Encounter
Brief Encounter is presented in the aspect ratio of 1.37:1. On widescreen televisions, black bars will appear on the left and right of the image to maintain the proper screen format. For the DVD edition, the picture has been slightly windowboxed to ensure that the maximum image is visible on all monitors. The new restoration was created in 4K resolution on a Spirit Datacine at Cineimage, London, from the best surviving safety negatives. Pixel Farm's PFClean was used for flicker correction.
The monaural soundtrack was restored from a sound print made from the original nitrate track negative. Clicks, thumps, hiss, and hum were manually removed using Pro Tools HD. Crackle was attenuated using AudioCube's integrated workstation.
