Stan Brakhage
Directed by: Stan Brakhage
In Criterion’s first volume of the anthology By Brakhage, we brought twenty-six astonishing works by the avant-garde film pioneer Stan Brakhage to home video for the first time. Now, in this second installment, we are proud to present thirty more of Brakhage’s visionary creations, from 1950s films to his final work, from 2003, curated by his wife, Marilyn Brakhage. Highlights of this collection include the war meditation 23rd Psalm Branch; hand-painted films from Persian Series; The Wonder Ring, made for a commission by Joseph Cornell; the autobiographical Scenes from Under Childhood, Section One; and the found-footage film Murder Psalm.

Release Notes on Restoration

The Wonder Ring
0n widescreen televisions, black bars will appear on the left and right of the image to maintain the proper screen format, except with Chinese Series, which is presented in 1.85:1. Black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are normal for this wider format.

The thirty films in volume two were selected by Marilyn Brakhage, in consultation with Fred Camper, R. Bruce Elder, and P. Adams Sitney. They were transferred from Brakhage's original printing negatives, newly minted interpositives, and preservation prints. The high-definition digital transfers were made on a Spirit Datacine under the supervision of Marilyn Brakhage and Mark Toscano of the Academy Film Archive.

No filtering, noise reduction, or other restoration tools have been applied to any of the picture elements.

Most of the films have no soundtrack. The sound for three of the four that do was mastered at 24-bit from 16 mm optical and original full—coat magnetic tracks. The audio for "..." Reel Five was remastered from the same CD of James Tenney's Flocking used by Brakhage in his original transfer; it was captured and speed-corrected to match Brakhage's original track frame for frame.
