“You will now listen to my voice . . . On the count of ten you will be in Europa . . .” So begins Max von Sydow’s opening narration to Lars von Trier’s hypnotic Europa (known in the U.S. as Zentropa), a fever dream in which American pacifist Leopold Kessler (Jean-Marc Barr) stumbles into a job as a sleeping-car conductor for the Zentropa railways in a Kafkaesque 1945 postwar Frankfurt. With its gorgeous black-and-white and color imagery and meticulously recreated (if then nightmarishly deconstructed) costumes and sets, Europa is one of the great Danish filmmaker’s weirdest and most wonderful works, a runaway-train ride to an oddly futuristic past.

Release Notes on Restoration
Europa
Europa is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are normal for this format. This new high-definition digital transfer was created from the original camera negative, which was scanned in 2K resolution on an ARRISCAN Film Scanner with Kodak DIGITAL ICE Technology. It was color corrected on Autodesk's Lustre system. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using Pixel Farm's PFClean and the MTI Digital Restoration System.
The soundtrack was mastered at 24-bit from the 35mm LT/RT optical track, and audio restoration tools were used to reduce clicks, pops, hiss, and crackle.
