Directed by: Jean Renoir
Director Jean Renoir's entrancing first color feature-shot entirely on location in India-is a visual tour de force. Based on the novel by Rumer Godden, the film eloquently contrasts the growing pains of three young women with the immutability of the holy Bengal River, around which their daily lives unfold. Enriched by Renoir's subtle understanding and appreciation for India and its people, The River gracefully explores the fragile connections between transitory emotions and everlasting creation.

Release Notes on Restoration

The River
The River was restored in the summer of 2004 under the supervision of the Academy Film Archive in Hollywood. The picture was restored from the original three-strip 35mm nitrate Technicolor camera negatives at Cinetech in Valencia, California, where the color timing was done by Keven Warr. The sound was transferred from a 35mm optical track print at DJ Audio in Studio City, California, and restored at Audio Mechanics in Burbank, California.

Restored by the Academy Film Archive, in association with the British Film Institute and Janus Films. Restoration funding provided by The Film Foundation and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The River is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and was transferred with the participation of the film’s editor, George Gale. On widescreen televisions, black bars will appear on the left and right of the image to maintain the proper screen format. This new high-definition digital transfer was created from the new 35mm restoration interpositive. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using the MTI Digital Restoration System. To maintain optimal image quality through the compression process, the picture on this dual-layer DVD-9 has been encoded at the highest-possible bit rate for the quantity of materials included.

The soundtrack was mastered at 24-bit from the optical soundtrack, and audio restoration tools were used to reduce clicks, pops, hiss, and crackle. The Dolby Digital 1.0 signal will be directed to the center channel on 5.1-channel sound systems, but some viewers may prefer to switch to two-channel playback for a wider dispersal of the mono sound.
