Some big unexpected box set no one sees coming (guessing just to be different because it’s going to be the not so secret Pasolini set right?) — I’ll guess a 10-15 film Claire Denis mega set.
Medicine for melancholy
The bishops wife / the preachers wife

I wonder if more Gilliam is on the horizon. A 4K of Baron Munchausen or Tideland? Both Zero Theorem and Don Quixote are ridiculously barebones releases

Supposedly they actually are working on this, well, that means waiting on Malick to finish it, and it will include at least some of the several extant cuts, as well as his new authoritative cut. Naturally I wouldn't expect this to appear until a couple years after he finishes editing his Baby Jesus movie, which I'm guessing will be another 18 months minimum. So "Voyage of Time" is coming, true to its title, in about 5-10 years.

I've been wondering why we haven't seen a Malick UHD yet- seems like the obvious go-to choice for the format jump. Are filmmakers involved in approving the upgrades from blu to 4K, when they already approved the initial transfer? I can see how Malick and Lubezki are too busy to stop by the office right now, but otherwise it's a curio

It depends. Even for a new restoration, they might only have to stop by for a day or 2. For a UHD bump (which is likely to be solely a matter of approving the HDR grade), I suppose it would require even less time, half a day or so. At this point, it might be enough to ask for general guidances and send the end result for approval.

There is one Malick available on UHD, Song to Song. However, I've been hoping to see any of his first 5 films make the jump.

Curious about what Malick’s been up to lately was surprised to find out he helped produce a documentary about a rapper.

Not sure if you're joking (not about the rapper) but he's constantly busy. He's in post on his Baby Jesus movie, he's produced (or lent his name and backslaps) to probably a dozen features and docs, including a couple curious looking psychedelic VR attempts, he directed a car commercial, supposedly he's working on longer cuts of "Voyage of Time" and "To the Wonder," and so on.

It's a shame his only 4K is "Song to Song" which is his worst film, and one of the worst films of the 21st century.

He's been in post on Way of the Wind for nearly three years so I would imagine that would get a release anytime now (though it's probably too late for this year so I'm banking on Cannes '23).

I couldn't disagree with you more on Song to Song which I regard as the best film of its release year (though I think that about every Malcik). It's as profoundly great and as aesthetically or formally refined in its own way as any of his other work.

I'll take this opportunity to mention too that the influence of his late career films can be recognized directly in the superb Age Out from A.J. Edwards (who edited some of those late films for Malick and whose first feature The Better Angels was produced by him). I can't think of any other that took the right lessons from Malick's technique more than this simple seeming gem, itself one of the most neglected and under appreciated films of the 21st century.

I just cant get with the characters and setting of "Song to Song." I already despise musicians and most modern music, and just find the whole milieu offputting, even if the film admittedly isn't necessarily about those things. I'd rather spend time with the Nazis and "downmarket" villagers in "A Hidden Life."

I prefer Trey Edward Shults to AJ Edwards (lots of Eds there) but, again, my interest in a film about Lincoln is less than zero, so I am "bias" (no Ed) as the youngsters say.

Love Affair and Written On The Wind, I think, and the latter was a long-delayed upgrade. If we’re getting Casablanca as this year’s Kane-sized major Laserdisc reacquisition for 4K then I doubt we’re getting anything else. However I’ll ignore my feelings and hope for any combination of:

Trouble In Paradise (upgrade)
Midnight
Ball Of Fire
Freaks
Casablanca 4K
Unfortunately, George Feltenstein pretty much confirmed Casablanca coming from WB by saying a big title was leaked early by getting announced in the European market
senseabove wrote: Wed Aug 10, 2022 7:05 pm I think folks are assuming Criterion is doing that one because that's how Citizen Kane was released: UHD from WB directly outside of the US, UHD from Criterion in the US.
Are you suggesting that Feltenstein may be dropping a clue for Criterion? That would be awesome if so

I mean, it would still be a big WB release that got leaked by retailers ahead of schedule even if the reason they're waiting to announce it is because they're coordinating with Criterion. Maybe I'm missing something but that feels to me like it would fit within Feltenstein's usual concerns, with the Criterion clue being only incidental. Maybe that's not any different from what you're saying though; even if he's not intentionally wading into teasing Criterion's plans it would be cool to know those podcasts could have relevant info anyway about more than the usual WAC stuff

I feel quite strongly that WB will be releasing it in the US themselves. Feltenstein said it took a lot of convincing over multiple meetings with executives to allow them to consider giving up something of the caliber of Citizen Kane to a licensor but he really felt it was a right fit considering Criterion’s history with the film (and while they’ve owned it many years, it wasn’t even a WB film to start with!). But Casablanca is not the same tier at all - it’s a movie that IS Warner Bros., the brand itself is in many ways still derived from the film. I don’t really see a good argument for why Criterion should be a better fit for it at all. Citizen Kane was not “the floodgates are open - expect every major WB title!” but a special exemption for a title I would not say WB has ever treated the same way as even things like Gone With The Wind and Singin’ in the Rain that they bought into somewhere along the way.

I agree with you about WB releasing Casablanca themselves (although I'd prefer CC doing it). But this is different than the Citizen Kane licensing. As my source told me back then, he had heard as far back as 2015 (during a Chimes of Midnight restoration screening) that Criterion obtained the rights for the 3 Welles RKO releases from WB. That WB is much different than the Warner Discovery today, largely because the state of physical media is much different. What that means going forward time will tell. But I expect Criterion to land more old Hollywood titles going forward especially if they are willing to release in 4K.

I don't really see Feltenstein teasing for Criterion. He hasn't done that before without mentioning Criterion by name. And I think that Criterion having not sent out a Casablanca clue is pretty much an indication they are not releasing it. This is too big a title not to hint as it's coming

As of 2020 Sofia Coppola said she didn't have plans to release any more of her movies with Criterion. I would love it if that has since changed, though.
