Super that this is being released again, but hilarious that an intentionally grungy verité style 16mm production is getting a 4K treatment (even if the remaster has improved things some). In any case I will be curious if there is any discernable benefit to the UHD. Further to his, my usual bugaboo of PAL sourced productions will come into play here, as Mubi went to the trouble of presenting this as a 25fps BD in the UK and a 24fps BD in the US.

No new extras on the Godard but the rest have quite a few new additions. Vie privee is hilariously awful, Viva Maria not much better. Danser is not great but much better than those two. The Godard rules but you already know that. Haven’t seen the doc but it was an option on my international flight a few months back, so it’s at least of commercial release value and not a Kickstarter thing

The set also has this bonus feature on Vie privee but I can’t figure out what film this is

Thanks for mentioning the English version on TCM, now I remember. Don´t know, though, if the film was intentionally produced in an English version also, or if the English dub came later through MGM, they had international distribution rights according to Variety:

I remember watching an English dub of A Very Private Affair on TCM, too. There's also a US trailer where the characters speak in English.

Finally came across a reasonably priced second-hand copy of The Thirty-Nine Steps/The Lady Vanishes set on eBay, bought it, and so glad I did!

I enjoyed both remakes much more than expected. The video quality is very good, except for the first few minutes (the title sequence) of The Thirty-Nine Steps, which is muddy-looking with blotchy encoding. Great set of extras too, with the standouts being a new interview with Elliott Gould (whose birthday is today!) - a somewhat meandering but highly entertaining account of his participation in The Lady Vanishes and encounters with Hitchcock - and an excellent in-depth featurette, "The End of the Line", about Hammer Studios at the time the remakes were created.

I highly recommend the set while it's still available.

A legal copy of Hot Enough for June is streaming free in HD on YouTube from Shout Factory’s channel btw. It’s pretty good for a British spy movie!

Some Girls Do was not as much fun as the film it’s a sequel to, Deadlier Than the Male, though. Similar goofy spirit but it feels a bit familiar (and this stuff is wayyy overplayed and outre by 1969, come on). Seeing Robert Morley in street clothes (and an earring!) is something, though!

Commentary on Don't Look Up here! These are all fantastic selections–Jaganrei and Scary True Stories in particular are cited by tons of J-Horror filmmakers from Kiyoshi Kurosawa to Hiroshi Takahashi as the two films that gave birth to the movement. Jaganrei also has the added quirk of being the first Japanese found footage feature film, predating America's McPherson Tape. It's a real coup that title is in this box, as it hasn't had a Western release before.

Don't Look Up is also the horror feature debut for Hideo Nakata, and is the film that he and screenwriter Takahashi made right before Ring, and you can see them refine the approach to horror that would be perfected in that film in real time.

A Haunted School/School of Ghosts is hilarious. It doesn’t take itself seriously at all, and it feels like the kind of movie the Ghostbusters reboots should have been
