Yeah, I've seen the one with the Studio Canal logo on it, I remember thinking it looked phenomenal.

This disc starts directly with the JWorks logo, then the Suncent logo, then the feature. If I recall right, the Japanese DVD plays that way also.

I'll share some comparison caps later, but wow, I found the Studio Canal version, and there is no remote comparison. There is a scene about an hour in where the children's cousin is trying to get them to sign away their custody to his mother. This is held in the octagonal room on one end of the children's house, where there are these huge, diaphanous white curtains, blowing lightly in the wind.

In the Imprint edition, the curtains are just a wash of usually undifferentiated white light, but the Studio Canal version is different. In the Studio Canal version you can see through the curtains to the windows behind them. You can see that the curtains are gathered lightly, because you can see texture on every bevel of the curtains. The difference here is more staggering than what I remembered. The compositions make so much more sense in the Studio Canal version. Plus, hey there, you can see film grain pretty much all the time in the Studio Canal version, only some of the time on the Imprint edition.

Home of the Brave is awful, We Were Strangers is great (though unfortunately barebones, but this is a worldwide Blu-ray debut), the Men is okay. Haven’t seen Ladies in Retirement.

Has anybody seen any restoration news for this? Surely it would've played TCM fest or something if there was one... Surely they can't be releasing the DVD-era master on BD.

Ladies in Retirement is great. Watched it a couple of times when it was on the channel. I'd love it for my collection but I've more or less given up on ordering anything from outside the EU. Remember when we used to live in a wide world? Not so long ago? Someone really needs to sit down with the economy and ask it what it's up to.

I assume like a lot of these Paramount titles they’ve put out, they are older masters. Hud is an outlier though, as they generally look pretty good or better (Paramount in general tended to take excellent care of their materials)

Hopefully Lust, Caution comes through with more features too. Great film, and I never picked up the KL release

yes I'm hoping they have good plans for that. I love that movie and wish it was getting a full 4K... hopefully at some point from Kino or even Criterion (who haven't worked with Lee for a little while)

+1. The film is currently locked in a 2K DI and IIRC they did quite a bit of effects work, so that's probably the basis an eventual upgrade has to work from. Still, with subtle HDR and good encoding, it'd undoubtedly be a stunning disc. That's something we won't get from Imprint, neither in HD nor 4K unless FiM is involved, but here's hoping for one of the better labels.

Lust, Caution is missing the location/time chyrons. KL's original release was also missing them but they did a replacement program. I've posted screenshots from the Imprint disc here, which can be compared with the correct way the shots should appear here.

This does open the very realistic possibility that the weird rights situation that prevented Deconstructing Harry and Sweet and Lowdown from the previous set (which I believe was entirely that the rights for those in particular needed an extra year or two to clear their previous studio deal and they could have just waited to include them) may finally be rectified in subsequent sets to get the number of unreleased titles down to… just Melinda and Melinda, I think?

I know they can’t do 4K for the first two on this set bc of Sony locking down elements to licensors but curious if they would do UHD for further films (both immediately following this run and if they dip earlier) when they don’t have to deal with Sony. As we know they have done 4K masters of Annie Hall and Manhattan as well as I believe Hannah and her Sisters more recently this also might finally allow those to appear on 4K as they all are at this point ancient, ancient BD transfers.

It is mildly appreciated this picks up literally exactly where the Arrow sets ended, as well…
