"And Criterion is hinting in their latest e-mail newsletter that their first titles from director Krzysztof Kieslowski will become part of the Collection this fall. Very cool indeed."
The above is a quote from the Digitalbits. It is interesting that they use the plural (the first titles...). Either they know more than we do, or they read the announcement to imply more than Veronique.
As someone who owns a code-free DVD player, I am less excited about the appearance of the Double Life of Veronique on Criterion Collection. I have no doubt they will do a great job. But the fact remains that there is already a great DVD of it. On the other hand, there is considerable room for improving the Decalog set. I hope the Digitalbits statement comes true, and we see more than Veronique.

From the newsletter": "...featured articles on foreign and classic movies and revivals, such as that of Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows; exclusive interviews with directors;"
I don't know about you guys, but I'm wondering why Criterion would even mention this title if it wasn't planning on releasing it?

We already knew that Army of Shadows was on the way. Rialto is currently circulating a 35mm restoration with Janus logos at the beginning. If the usual Rialto-Criterion release pattern holds up, we can look for Army of Shadows sometime in the Spring of 2007.Satyajit's Son wrote:From the newsletter": "...featured articles on foreign and classic movies and revivals, such as that of Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows; exclusive interviews with directors;"

You know, just after I hit "submit" I thought someone might call me on that. I probably should have said "odd" or "interesting" instead of "suspect," as something like this in a seperate email might indicate that there could be something actually meaningful in that upper left position in the actual newsletter, instead of the announcement we just saw.godardslave wrote:"suspect"?arsonfilms wrote:I just got a "Criterion Newsletter" announcing the new mega-box set, with no other information. It's a bit early for the regular newletter, but it seems a bit suspect that it wouldn't just be included in that.in what way?

I am not sure what you mean by "no other information". It lists all the DVD's included, and gives the price of $650. The list includes 3 DVD's that are not available otherwise: Fires on the Plain, Pepe le Moko and Miss Julie. Hopefully these will be released individually in 2007.arsonfilms wrote:I just got a "Criterion Newsletter" announcing the new mega-box set, with no other information. I meant no information that doesn't have anything to do with the box set, and no information that we didn't discover from the initial announcement the other day. The appeal of the newsletter (for me, at least) is the possibility of finding out something we didn't know before it gets sent out. I knew all of that before it was sent out, as did the other members of the forum.kekid wrote:I am not sure what you mean by "no other information". I'll be more careful to clarify everything the next time I post.

Correction: Duvivier's Pépé le Moko is already available (# 172).kekid wrote:The list includes 3 DVD's that are not available otherwise: Fires on the Plain, Pepe le Moko and Miss Julie.
The previously unreleased titles included in the 50 Years box set are: Fires on the Plain (Kon Ichikawa), Le Jour se lève, (Marcel Carné), Miss Julie (Alf Sjöberg), and Three Documentaries: The Great Chase, The Love Godesses, and Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist (Saul J. Turell).

Unless I'm horribly mistaken, the best work of Boris Karloff is very solidly in Universal's hands. Something else could be kind of cool, but it's clearly the stuff that got picked up when Eclipse was still happening.indiannamednobody wrote:Thank you. As one of the 15 people who shelled out the $40 for that "exclusive" scarface DVD in that absurd box, I'm hoping it's the latter.Musashi219 wrote:Could be Scarface - besides it has only been available in that ridiculous boxset and Hawks deserves to have his name in the collection.
Well that or Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Seriously. I'd love to see that again.
