i never said it sucked. and i already explained my beef, but i'll say it again: i said it was silly to waste time on when it could be better spent working on so many obscure/OOP bare boned classics.

Mirror was great with some exceptional imagery (most notably for me, the scene of the barn on fire in the distance with the camera situated just before the front porch of the house, looking out, past the water dripping from the gutter above), but ultimately it was Nostalghia that will stick with me, and it's a real shame that there's no DVD for this, because it is a real masterpiece with its resonating visual poetry and basically brilliant at every shot. It's too bad that the print looks like it was run over by a truck, and sounded like it too (frames were missing, there was the campfire clicks and pops all throughout the movie with outrageous debris all over the print) and it's also too bad that the theater had air-conditioning problems where the air only went on every half-hour or so because I will admit I began to feel sleepy (but never did snooze). Either way, seeing Nostalghia on the big screen showed me that it needs to be restored and released adequately, as it's a masterpiece. You mean no Nostalghia DVD in print in the USA? Agreed on that count... but the out-of-print Fox Lorber disc is relatively easy to find for not too much money, and the quality is not as bad as you'd expect -- better than, say Andrei Rublev from CC. Not sure how CC's laser disc of that title looked years ago. It may be easily available, but I can determine by looking at the DVDBeaver screen caps that the movie deserves a DVD of much, much higher quality. Well I absolutely agree -- more Tarkovsky and in better shape is what we need. But if one hasn't seen Nostalghia, for instance, they shouldn't hold their breath waiting for a pristine presentation.
