I believe this story originated with a poster on IMDB who said he interviewed Wes Anderson during one of the press junkets for DL and brought up the question about an eventual criterion release.

Apparently Wes had told him that it would eventually be a two-disc Criterion set but that Fox was going to put out their own edition first and get exclusive marketshare for a year. (Which makes sense, it allows them to try and recoup as much money from the film as possible, plus also get the extra cash from the licensing fee to criterion and any additional royalties, assuming any of this is true.)

That cover first reminded me of the Secondrun covers and naturally the I for identity/individual is invisible.

I quite like their retro vibe. I'm sure people will moan they look like amateur copy & paste jobs, but you have to take them in context -- those blatant cut-outs are a throwback to the simple collages often found on posters in the 60s.

The new Criterion releases have pretty boring covers, I really don't like the excessive amount of blank space on Missing. However, the Mizoguchi set looks superb.

I get the pulp-novel style of the Melville covers; too bad I don't really like that style (in contrast to the way I loved the pulp sci-fi cover for Robinson Crusoe on Mars). It's not bad, it's just... not my thing.

I have most of Carver's stuff anyway. I may hock the old set just to get rid of that horrible digipak. Did anyone else have issues with the book fitting?

The two Melville's are nice. Neither are surprises, but the covers are definitely trying to aim at the Tarantino fans who know there are cool foreign films but never knew where to begin. Plus the gun as the "L" is a nice little touch for those who love Sopranos and don't take risks when it comes to judging movies by their cover.

I'm surprised they aren't also throwing Faces into the Cassavetes mix. Maybe they just wanted to go with the film with the coolest and longest titles?

Missing is nice. Great movie -- all thanks to Jack Lemmon. Nice for them to include him on the cover.
