I think you owe Criterion's interns an apology.

mfunk9786 wrote:Would that be a year from theatrical release, or a year from DVD release? While DVD release would make more sense as far as that type of rights issue goes, it would certainly also make a lot of sense to release Bottle Rocket and Darjeeling on the same day... and if that day falls near the end of October, it would align with the time frame in which the film came out in theaters last year.
I believe this story originated with a poster on IMDB who said he interviewed Wes Anderson during one of the press junkets for DL and brought up the question about an eventual criterion release.

Apparently Wes had told him that it would eventually be a two-disc Criterion set but that Fox was going to put out their own edition first and get exclusive marketshare for a year. (Which makes sense, it allows them to try and recoup as much money from the film as possible, plus also get the extra cash from the licensing fee to criterion and any additional royalties, assuming any of this is true.)

Those Melville covers are the most disgusting things ever to come from this label.

That cover first reminded me of the Secondrun covers and naturally the I for identity/individual is invisible.

don't be dramatic! I like them, Souffle reminds me of a 60s pulp novel cover.

I'm a little perplexed by the Short Cuts and Cassavetes repackaging.

I quite like their retro vibe. I'm sure people will moan they look like amateur copy & paste jobs, but you have to take them in context -- those blatant cut-outs are a throwback to the simple collages often found on posters in the 60s.

Everyone needs a catchphrase!

I do like the dress-casual color scheme of the Mizoguchi set.

Wait - so is Short Cuts going to be the same release, or is it going to be sans the book?

Sans the book. Buy it now if you want the stories.

The new Criterion releases have pretty boring covers, I really don't like the excessive amount of blank space on Missing. However, the Mizoguchi set looks superb.

I like the cover for Le Doulos. The one for Souffle makes it look like a remake.

Well, if they've decided to delay them, I'm sure we'll hear about it in a few days when the newsletter arrives.

I get the pulp-novel style of the Melville covers; too bad I don't really like that style (in contrast to the way I loved the pulp sci-fi cover for Robinson Crusoe on Mars). It's not bad, it's just... not my thing.

Great covers all around this month. I guess the intern responsible for the Ozu cover is back to doing to Starbucks runs.

I have most of Carver's stuff anyway. I may hock the old set just to get rid of that horrible digipak. Did anyone else have issues with the book fitting?

The two Melville's are nice. Neither are surprises, but the covers are definitely trying to aim at the Tarantino fans who know there are cool foreign films but never knew where to begin. Plus the gun as the "L" is a nice little touch for those who love Sopranos and don't take risks when it comes to judging movies by their cover.

I'm surprised they aren't also throwing Faces into the Cassavetes mix. Maybe they just wanted to go with the film with the coolest and longest titles?

Missing is nice. Great movie -- all thanks to Jack Lemmon. Nice for them to include him on the cover.
