Anything care to speculate as to when Dodeskaden will be released? A brand new transfer with a Donald Ritchie commentary will make my year.

The new DVD from Legend Films is not an extended cut. It is actually shorter than the old Image DVD and does not feature the Harryhausen commentary as promised.

Hopefully there is still hope that a better restoration will come out in the future, especially since Janus seems to have a print that is better than those currently available.

One of the posters on .com who has connections with Criterion posted several weeks ago that Criterion are indeed prepping a DVD of Things to Come for release this year.

In the meantime, R2 company Network has already released the extended version of Things to Come that was on TCM. It's a great package, with an even longer "reconstruction" that uses stills and intertitles (much like Metropolis). I can't imagine Criterion outdistancing the Network edition by much -- except perhaps in the sound department. (The audio is the only really weak thing about the Network edition.)

In fact, if I'm remembering correctly, the print TCM showed was also preceded by a Channel 4 logo, which indicates that Janus/Criterion is working from -- or at least currently distributing -- the Network-sponsored restoration.

Wow, all of this is great news! This was actually the first time I ever saw Things to Come, and I was thoroughly impressed. It would be great to have a Criterion release this year.

Well, Things To Come would be consistent with CC's other acquisitions of Korda/London films material that we've seen indications of lately (and in the case of Thief of Bagdad, basically had confirmed). Can't wait for these to start appearing.

Since we are discussing a possibility of Criterion issuing R1 version of Network's Special Edition my question is: is there any chance Criterion doing Ipcress File?

I would rather see them issuing Ipcress than THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD...

Is any other label planning to re-issue Ipcress File for R1?

Huh? There is a great 2-disc edition out by Warner.

He is referring to the fact that the R2 DVD company, Network, has released a special edition of Things To Come, not the Sidney Lumet film, Network.

They're the company who released an unbelievably great version of "Black Narcissus". And a pretty bad one of "The Dead". Their "Things to come" has gotten a lot of praise, though, but I think I'll wait for the Criterion in this case.

Fox's Forty Guns is now out of print. It would make a great companion for The Furies or the impending Fuller titles.

What are the other Fuller titles besides White Dog?

The Naked Kiss and Shock Corridor are scheduled for re-releases in 2008, according to Jonathan Turell and email responses received by members.

Isn't that DVD also some weird colorized version? From what I understand this is just a public domain release by a company that specializes in digitally colouring public domain films. I'm sure Criterion hardly pays attention to such things or take them seriously.

EDIT: Just went to their website where they have trailers for their films. The colorized versions of Carnival of Souls and My Man Godfrey scare me.

But see tryavna's post above. That Network 2-discer is, as t suggests, excellent.

Excellent news! I've held off buying Shock Corridor for awhile in the hopes that they'd re-do it.

Just for fun (and to occupy my fingers a-twittering in anticipation): I predict that the April Criterions will be The Thief of Baghdad (seems to be a given), Zentropa (the blog mention was all the way back in October, so it seems likely to come soon), a Malle (My Dinner with Andre, perhaps), and Mishima (though it wouldn't surprise me if this one doesn't make it again). No idea about Eclipse, though perhaps Imamura or Mizoguchi will finally surface.

I think we will finally see Salo, and (more a wish than a prediction) some Gremillon.

I think he means as in April is a little too early to expect the release. Or he could just be out of the loop, but Bottle Rocket is coming. Sometime.

It's probably about time for another rerelease, hopefully Salo. Maybe the Fullers, but I think White Dog would come out first. Unless they really want to one-two punch everyone's wallets.

If I remember correctly, Kobayashi's "The Human condition" was scheduled for an early 2008 release. This would be my most desired CC release of those that were rumoured for the next months.
