Should direct mail from Kim Hendrickson, Jonathan Turrell, or other members of the Criterion staff be considered "CERTAINTIES"? (i.e. Max Ophuls boxset)

Sosin apparently has written scores for Days of Youth and A Straightforward Boy, as well.

Interesting what Criterion is doing with Ozu. Looks like we will see a Ozu silents box set sooner than we thought. A Straightforward Boy is a short, so I wonder what is the third film? I Was Born, But... could easily be released alone, but why just three? Maybe they are planing on Ozu silents from Eclipse.

That's all the information I could locate on Sosin and Ozu based on his comment on that blog and this list, nor does he divulge anything in his most recent blog entry.

Holy shit, the certainties list is the longest ever.

And we should add TWO OR THREE THINGS to it as well, via RIALTO. Rialto has confirmed through email that it will be released onto DVD by Criterion.

Unless otherwise indicated, shouldn't we assume that all Rialto titles are definites (all titles that are in theaters from now on with the Rialto banner)?

With the exception of Godzilla and The Producers, most of their arthouse output is released through Criterion, so I don't see why not add those to certainties.

LA NOTTE is coming definitely (Kim Hendrickson), we just don't know when...

If you are referring to the 'Speakeasy' interview, she say's "we hope to get to this soon". I don't know if this really confirms anything. Someone should email Kim on this.

No, actually I have direct e-mail confirmation from her... Only thing delaying it is finding decent film elements up to CC standards she says...

I don't know about that. They will only release this film if there are decent elements, and like many other films, decent elements may not surface. I feel like there are plenty of other films for which they own the rights but wont release until good prints exist, and in some cases, the good may never surface. LA NOTTE isn't a CERTAINTY until we know for sure that proper elements have been found.

But that's just my opinion.

Listen, she emailed me on this recently. and it's pretty clear (at least to me)... This is a silly exercise in that virtually all the above list would be susceptible to the same uncertainty or some other... While the CC is considerably more relaxed about informally indicating their intentions and position, precise releases are bound to be 'certain' only when officially announced...

Nope.

"In the works" means they are working on it. Early 2008/Late 2007 means they are working on it. Rialto means it's already been worked on.

Waiting for materials means EISENSTEIN SILENTS.

Confirmed or not, the list stands for films not on the R1 market (with a few exceptions) and have been linked to Criterion some way or another. I think it serves a big purpose for many people, not just on this forum, but on the net. Everything can change, even if announced officially so I don't think it really makes a difference. We are just compiling the evidence.

Well she talked of trying to set a definite release date, so not EISENSTEIN SILENTS....

In her own words, they're working on it...

We've had some problems obtaining decent mastering materials for LA NOTTE so I'm afraid I don't have a release date yet. We're trying to get this out there but we don't think we could release an acceptable version at the moment.

Personally, I'm dying to replace my Fox Lorber disc of LA NOTTE with the CC version...

It wasn't a confirmation. I got an email in December/January saying there is no boxset coming.

Two quickies:

-Marienbad opening in November

-Pierrot not currently in the works

That's a pity - PIERROT is currently in a pretty dire Fox Lorber DVD, badly in need of replacement...

Still a decent MARIENBAD is to be looked forward to....
