Metrograph hosted a screening a year or two ago with an in-depth discussion between cinematographer Frederick Elmes and production designer Mark Friedberg. That would be great extra if it was recorded. (I think it was, but I don't remember for sure.)

Extras are up and they’re disappointingly slim:
NEW Inside The Ice Storm: Interview with Christina Ricci
EPK Interviews: Sigourney Weaver, Joan Allen, Christina Ricci and Elijah Wood

I'm not sure how these things go, but if it's not too late, I'd seriously email whoever can do something about it and tell them to contact Metrograph. No idea who those contacts would be though.

A few things I remember from that discussion - when Friedberg first met with Ang Lee he was prepared to talk about the sociopolitical aspects of the book, but much to his surprise, Ang Lee wasn't interested in discussing that and only wanted to talk about the ice-related imagery he had in mind. That would also be a big issue - when they had to film the literal ice storm, real ice wouldn't be feasible for obvious reasons, so they had to figure out what physical materials could be used that "looked" like ice. Anyway, they go into great detail about their own work on the film which you rarely get a chance to hear from any cinematographer and production designer on any movie, let alone both of them together.

You’re right, this would’ve definitely deserved a spot on disc. I also don’t have an email but a BR user managed to contact SC’s PR team (they confirmed that no 4K is coming), so if anywhere, that might be the way to go… if one’s got a contact though. Even if we managed to get that across, I highly doubt that they’d be willing to delay the release date and license the Q&A from Metrograph. I’m mentioning that as the encoding most likely already took place, if not disc replication as well.

Ah well. Any chance Criterion will do this? If they're working on it, maybe we can give them a heads up.

It is Fox in the US, so probably not.

Studiocanal saving the day since Disney sucks:
The Ice Storm is
coming to 4K!
SC confirmed that The Ice Storm is only coming as a BD release.
absolutely cursed. ugh.
I can't imagine it would be the biggest priority Fox upgrade for Criterion either if they were to start upgrading those
I figure the Malick films would be the top priority if the vaults were reopened.

As previously suspected, SC's new BD of The Ice Storm has no new master and reused the same dated transfer Criterion made back in the day.

SC's press release mentioned BD only but the other forum's news section mistakenly wrote it as 4K.

They never promised 4K anywhere. Blu-ray.com just randomly made it up.

But in the corresponding thread on that forum, I seem to remember someone mentioned the film being available to license in 4K format from Studio Canal. That must mean a 4K restoration exists, no? Then I wonder why this blu-ray from SC themselves cannot feature that restoration.

A BR member mentioned that the film was listed as having a 4K restoration by SC in a catalogue they presented at film markets and a promo video in 2023. Either all that was wrong or something happened in between that prevented them from releasing the supposed new master. Maybe Ang Lee didn’t approve it.

The "source" seems to be the following video which does not specify any formats or even territories.

I seem to remember a similar mix-up over Irréversible, a film that is to all intents and purposes a 2K digital work that would derive no benefit from 4K.

Canal seemingly did 4k DCPs of Irréversible, hence the mix-up.
Here, the video makes 0 mention of a UHD release.

quite an editorialization
anyway, wonder if Criterion will do this one now? I know Sony had previously put out a boxset exclusive 4K, but they did
Cronos about the same time BFI did

Wasn't there a rumour that del Toro wanted to do a 4K upgrade for the whole Trilogia box with Pan's Labyrinth also?
