Re: Studio Canal / Kinowelt / Optimum
Does this Criterion will redo their whole set or should I just jump on this (as someone who loves these films)?

Personally, I'd wait until reviews are out for the SC set.

I assume Criterion will do a UHD set, eventually. I do have a question, wasn't Parade either shot or finished on tape?

I, personally, would not assume that. Or I would assume the word "eventually" means "several years from now." If someone who loves these films already has the Criterion set, I see no reason (other than shelf space) not to keep it for any exclusive extras and get the SC set for the new masters—if they indeed look markedly superior to the Criterion BDs.

Also they already released Playtime on its own. That doesn't preclude it being included in a future set but it does make me wonder if they go with individuals for the other films too? And what would they include the shorts with?

Would be curious to know what versions are included here. Still have some reason to regret cashing in on my BFI Blu-rays, I think.

There is no mention of the relatively important alternate versions of the films in the sell sheet other than Jour de fête, so I would think that some components of the Criterion and BFI releases will remain indispensable sadly. Still a big win if all the main features look up to snuff in new restos, as I believe the Criterion Playtime UHD is the same relatively ancient source as the BD, only badly cropped. All will be revealed.TMDaines wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2026 9:24 am Would be curious to know what versions are included here. Still have some reason to regret cashing in on my BFI Blu-rays, I think.

"Relatively ancient source?" Hardly, the blu ray in the box set had a new digital restoration from the 70mm negative, and I still don't believe there's any reason to think they've taken an additional pass at the Playtime restoration from the boxset. It's likely to be the same underlying master which looks beautiful, albeit with imperfect color timing.Zot! wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2026 11:20 amThere is no mention of the relatively important alternate versions of the films in the sell sheet other than Jour de fête, so I would think that some components of the Criterion and BFI releases will remain indispensable sadly. It's from 2013, that is during the Obama administration. I have two children younger than this restoration who can rollerskate. It looks just fine, but the significant cropping on the Criterion UHD defeats an otherwise reasonable upgrade from the same source.Drucker wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2026 1:42 pm"Relatively ancient source?"
