Presented on 4K UHD and Blu-ray for the first time worldwide are both KAFKA (1991 Original Theatrical Cut) and MR. KNEFF (2021 Director’s Re-Cut). Starring Jeremy Irons, this surreal mystery cult classic first saw the world as Kafka, blending reality with the fictional works of author Franz Kafka. Later in 2021, he premiered his recut and reimagined version of the film, Mr. Kneff, transforming the picture into a silent and sepia-tinted shortened vision.

Named one of the top films of 1993 by Time Magazine is KING OF THE HILL (1993), the moving coming-of-age drama and playwright A.E. Hotchner’s memoir adaptation, which comes to Blu-ray. Set in the 1930s Depression-era Midwest, this Palme d’Or-nominated film follows a young boy who is forced to navigate life alone after his mother is committed to a sanatorium.

Soderbergh’s crime noir THE UNDERNEATH (1995) also comes to Blu-ray, a remake of the 1949 film Criss Cross and a tale of passion, betrayal and murder. With a screenplay written by Soderbergh himself (under the pseudonym Sam Lowry), it follows a recovering gambling addict caught between feelings for his ex-wife and her dangerous boyfriend.

This Limited Edition 4-Disc Hardbox is accompanied by a Hardcover Booklet, including brand NEW essays by Brian Tallerico and Francesco Massaccesi.

Kafka is the dictionary entry for weirdo sophomore follow-up to an unexpected big hit and I’m more than okay not owning it (and the re-edit sounds like the movie equivalent of puking on a pile of vomit), so I’ll just stick with my Criterion double feature for the other films

Overpriced and an unimpressive selection of films outside Kafka. I caught the Mr. Kneff cut and wasn’t a fan. King of the Hill is decent.

Let’s see what North America brings. I can’t believe this thing has been talked about for a decade now, but this sad initial iteration is what they come up with, timed for release not too far away from a $600 Kubrick box set.
