The Sacred & The Cursed: The Joko Anwar Collection [4-Disc Blu-ray Box Set]
“ONE OF THE WORLD’S LEADING GENRE AUTEURS.”
Screen Anarchy

4 OF JOKO ANWAR’S MOST ACCLAIMED FILMS
FROM DIRECTOR-APPROVED MASTERS
WITH 10+ COMBINED HOURS OF SPECIAL FEATURES

He’s the award-winning writer/producer/director who’s been called “truly brilliant” (Heaven of Horror), “a filmmaker who dares to walk where few have gone” (Independent Observer) and “one of the best working in the genre today” (Voices from the Balcony). Now for the first time ever, Severin Films brings together a quartet of classics by “The Indonesian Master of Horror” (Bloody Disgusting) Joko Anwar: Anwar’s global breakthrough SATAN’S SLAVES redefined Indonesian cinema and remains a modern horror milestone. Far more than just a sequel, SATAN’S SLAVES 2: COMMUNION is an over-the-top and wickedly grisly haunted house masterpiece. IMPETIGORE, his love letter to the genre, shattered taboos and shocked international audiences like never before. And with the neo-noir hit DEAD TIME, Anwar merges supernatural folklore with contemporary terrors to craft a visually stunning nightmare. All four films are presented from masters approved by Anwar, with over 10 combined hours of Special Features produced exclusively for this collection.

Disc 1: SATAN’S SLAVES (2017)

For his 2017 breakthrough, Joko Anwar took the 1980 classic by Sisworo Gautama Putra and reinvented its themes of supernatural folklore to deliver an “extraordinary” (Malevolent Dark), “take-no-prisoners” (Slash Film), “deliciously creepy spectacle oozing with Satanic inspiration” (Dread Central) that shattered box-office records and single-handedly launched The New Golden Age of Indonesian Horror: When the matriarch of a struggling family dies after a mysterious illness, it will unlock a slow-burning nightmare of ancestral superstition, occult carnage and several of the most “gloriously crafted scares” (Warped Perspective) in modern horror history. Tara Basro (IMPETIGORE) and Bront Palarae (GHOST IN THE CELL) star in “one of the best remakes of the last decade” (Horror News) and “a nerve-jangling good time where the mayhem hardly lets up” (Daily Dead), now presented from a master approved by the writer/director with over 2 hours of Special Features.

Disc 2: SATAN’S SLAVES 2: COMMUNION (2022)

Five years after SATAN’S SLAVES broke box-office records and forever redefined Indonesian horror, Joko Anwar crafted his follow-up hailed as “truly disturbing” (Gizmodo), “darker and more macabre than before” (Bloody Disgusting) and “one of the few sequels that totally surpasses the original” (Nerdly): Having barely escaped their rural Satanic nightmare, the Suwono family now lives in a decrepit Jakarta apartment building that seethes with urban dread, grisly secrets and demonic havoc where the damned find no solace, evil demands its harvest and “every scene is punctuated with horrific visions that you can’t unsee” (The Scariest Things). SATAN’S SLAVES stars Tara Basro, Endy Arfian, Nasar Anuz, Bront Palarae, Egi Fedly and Ayu Laksmi return for “a wickedly malevolent slice of Indonesian horror that’s right on in its razor-toothed execution” (Slash Film), now presented from a master approved by the writer/director with 3 hours of new Special Features.

Disc 3: IMPETIGORE (2019)

Following SATAN’S SLAVES, his HBO Asia series Folklore and the superhero blockbuster GUNDALA, Joko Anwar returned to horror with this “relentlessly frightening” (Creepy Kingdom) love letter to the genre that premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and remains “a gruesome descent into madness that will leave your skin crawling” (Daily Dead): When a cynical young city woman travels to her remote ancestral village in search of an inheritance, she’ll instead unleash a legacy of dark tragedy, grim butchery and a grotesque family curse “dripping with otherworldly weirdness” (When It Was Cool). Tara Basro (SATAN’S SLAVES 1 & 2), Ario Bayu (THE QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC) and Marissa Anita (Nightmares and Daydreams) star in the modern shock classic where “Anwar goes for broke in terms of gonzo bloodshed, over-the-top reveals and a ballsy approach to shattering cinematic taboos” (Bloody Disgusting), now presented from a master approved by the writer/director.

Disc 4: DEAD TIME (2007)

With only his second film as writer/director, Joko Anwar captured international acclaim, rewrote the rules of Indonesian cinema and launched his global career via the “disturbing and absolutely magnificent noir-horror that was a great prelude of what was about to follow” (Asian Movie Pulse): In a city sweltering with violence and despair, a jaded cop and a desperate reporter investigate a series of brutal killings that will trap them in a web of superstition, corruption, ghoulish creatures and “the best political thriller since the heyday of Alan Pakula” (Sight and Sound). Fachry Albar (THE FORBIDDEN DOOR) and Ario Bayu (IMPETIGORE) star in this “strange, unpredictable and beautiful film that will take you for quite a ride” (Screen Anarchy) – also known as KALA – now presented from a scan approved by the writer/director with over 2 hours of new Special Features.

THE NORTH AMERICAN DISC PREMIERE
WITH 6+ HOURS OF SPECIAL FEATURES

It redefined both fairy tales and body horror, stunned audiences at Sundance, was nominated for an Oscar® and remains a “cinematically exhilarating” (Vulture), “playfully grotesque” (Indiewire) and “undeniably vicious piece of entertainment” (RogerEbert.com). Now you can experience the “jaw-dropping debut” (Paste Magazine) by writer/director Emilie Blichfeldt on physical media for the first time ever in North America: In this grisly reinterpretation of Cinderella, a young maiden – an unforgettable performance by Lea Myren – will submit to a series of increasingly brutal cosmetic extremes to win the love of a less-than-charming prince. But in a kingdom of cruelty where beauty is pain, what is the ultimate human cost of ‘happily ever after’? “Imagine Cinderella meets SUSPIRIA meets Cronenberg,” says Elements of Madness. “THE UGLY STEPSISTER is surreal, brilliant, masterfully crafted and one of the best horror movies of the year.”
