Keoma (Plaion) - caps. The 4K disc isn’t as dark in motion as the caps suggest.

The second release with the two cuts has Atmos whereas the theatrical only 4K has 7.1. Both are BD-66s and don’t have the best compression, which is the same for many of Fox’s early 4K releases. The theatrical only 4K release has more visible noise than the extended one, which was clearly managed to conserve disc space. Despite the unattractive PQ I went with the extended 4K due to the excellent Atmos track.

30 Days of Night (Icon) - caps. Filmout scan with grain management and overall less detail than the BD.

cheers nicolas, I will go the same route as I find DNR implementation for noise more tolerable than DNR implementation for grain

Kill Bill The Whole Bloody Affair has the same flaws as the individual UHDs of Vols 1 & 2, i.e. smearing (especially what was Vol 1) and derived from an early 2000s Digital Interpositive. I haven't seen any comments about the encoding of TWBA. Maybe when Tarantino passes, someone will endeavor to do a fresh restoration from scratch.

No comments on the encode of Threads by Severin yet, just comments on lingering print damage that didn't or couldn't get cleaned up.

It looked shit in the theater too. I’m resigned to love it as it is, and BD is just fine for that.

Threads Severin) - comparison. HDR is on the bright side, so I'd probably watch it downconverted to SDR but otherwise I really like what I see.
Death Warrant (MVD) - beautiful remaster but with frame rate skips (encoding error)
Double Impact (MVD) - dto. and MVD still haven't fixed this. Get the 88 or Capelight import instead.

I don't have a way to rip discs so I can only contribute to this thread anecdotally on stuff that hasn't already been brought up here but:

Fudoh: The New Generation (Radiance UHD) - Unadvertised HDR10 grade that looks better than the equivalent Blu-ray it's packaged with, grain rendered very clean even when it's heavy. FiM encode so surely it's better than the Media Blasters UHD, but there are still issues with frame stability, some shots have this jitter that kinda hurts to look at. Not a night and day upgrade over the Blu, but it's better and despite its issues, probably the best it'll ever be.

Can't remember if this thread settled on a colour tier for Audition (Arrow), yes the surround tracks are problematic but the original 2.0 is great. FiM did the encode and it looks stunning in Dolby Vision. For video quality, it belongs in the red reference category, but I'm not yet entirely sure how audio issues play into the tier lists here, other than the separate list for audio issues.

Cruel Story of Youth (Criterion) has some UHD encoding issues I mentioned in that release's respective thread. The equivalent Blu-ray is a lot cleaner, not absolutely flawless if you're really gonna be a pixel peeper, but more consistent. When the UHD looks good, it looks amazing, yet the compression blocking in the scene around 25 minutes in weighs down the overall quality. I'll let someone else here take a look and decide how to rank it, so far I haven't seen anyone else talk about the quality of this release other than the specs being posted on the other forum.

Thank you for your feedback malaluchi. I wonder if Arrow are going to fix the 4.0 and 5.1 tracks on the quiet for the standard release of Audition. I don't think they pulled the release off the shelves. Since the original 2.0 is fine, I'll still put it in the red but with a caveat. I'd probably put Cruel Story in the blue because that tier has a few titles that are actually perfect but not in the red because the BD was already a big step up.

Looked spectacular to me though I should mention in fairness that the only comparison I have is an HD rip from backchannels that I don't know if it was from the Vinegar Syndrome BD or not. Either way, the giallo-esque lighting and the textures of the clothes were the chef's kiss.

All previous releases were sourced from the 2K restoration created in 2011.

This one is from the 4K restoration created in 2023.

I haven’t had a chance to see it myself yet, but I initially recorded the commentary to the 2011 version and was then sent a low-nitrate MP4 of the 2023 version to make sure that it synced properly. Even then it was obvious from flipping between the two versions that the 2023 version had appreciably more vibrant colours.

But a peculiarity of this film was that it was shot in a proprietary format that’s very similar to Super 35mm in that the natively 1.85:1 image occupies the full width of the 35mm frame between the sprocket holes (i.e. using the soundtrack area). The original plan was to blow it up to 70mm, but that fell through for financial reasons, so it ended up being released in 35mm, heavily cropped to 2.35:1. Cinematographer Witold Sobociński was very unhappy with that version, and was only too grateful for the opportunity to fix it in 2011—at which point he decided to retain the original 1.85:1 framing (although the original plan was to crop it to 2.2:1 for 70mm).

By the time of the 2023 restoration, Sobociński had died, but fortunately both his grandsons are distinguished cinematographers in their own right, so they were admirably qualified to oversee the 4K grading. And the fact that there were two of them almost certainly helped too, as they would have prioritised their grandfather’s intentions (albeit with superior scanning technology) rather than gone for revisionist grandstanding.

Currently there aren’t any plans for a replacement program for Audition. I’ve written to Arrow’s customer service a few times but they didn’t bother and gave me the usual replies. I guess there weren’t enough people who reached out to them about the issues. It’d be a real disappointment if they fixed the discs for the standard without replacing them for buyers of the LE.
