Inane cop and criminal buddy / enemy film with no twist too predictable and yet still so dull that they barely constitute as such. Mel Gibson's accent comes and goes in a brilliant bit of self-reflexivity on the transient nature of the film's characters. Or he's just doing a shit job in an unimportant film, whichever. Kurt Russell looks like a child actor trying too hard to look adult. And Michelle Pfeiffer is also in this film and she looks as confused as the audience as to why.

Re: Underworld
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this. The story sounds familiar, but it’s apparently an original screenplay?

Re: Underworld
This & Rawhead Rex were Clive Barker’s first venture into feature filmmaking, both directed by Pavlou & (co-)written by Barker. I’ve still not seen this one, but I do know Barker was very unhappy with the results and I’m pretty sure he’s disowned them both. Given that his three self-directed features are the only ones to truly resemble his writing, I’m not surprised.

I really love this film. Each of the three leads is fleshed out so beautifully, with no clear delineation between heroes and villains. Plus, it takes advantage of Los Angeles’ beautiful South Bay region, which looks amazing when shot by Conrad Hall

Heads-up! There is a Dolby Vision playback issue with this disc that affects Panasonic 824 and 9000 players. Playing the disc in HDR10 works fine.

Of course there is. At this point Arrow should just add a note to the specs saying DV isnlt going to work with a Panasonic.

A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy

Seeking to revitalise the ailing Chinese fantasy genre, legendary producer Tsui Hark assembled the crack team of A Better Tomorrow II action director Ching Siu-Tung, Peking Opera Blues scriptwriter Yuen Kai-Chi and superstars Leslie Cheung, Joey Wong and Wu Ma for the action-comedy classic A Chinese Ghost Story. The film conquered the 1987 Hong Kong box office, begat two sequels and cemented Tsui’s reputation as Hong Kong’s most respected producer.
The timid yet earnest Ling Choi-San (Cheung) takes shelter for the night in an abandoned temple, where he meets and soon falls in love with the beautiful Nip Siu-Sihn (Wong). But when he realises that she’s a ghost forced to lead men astray by an evil tree demon, Ling must enlist the help of rambunctious Taoist warrior Yin Chik-Ha (Wu) to free her from its grasp. In A Chinese Ghost Story II, Ling Choi-San is drafted to help a group of rebels battle otherworldly forces and rescue their captured leader, aided once again by Yin Chik-Ha as well as the formidable and slightly mad swordsman Jihau (Jacky Cheung, Bullet in the Head). Set 100 years after the events its predecessor, the final instalment introduces Fong (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Hard Boiled), a bumbling monk apprentice tasked with transporting a golden statue of Buddha to the neighbouring county, only to stumble into the lair of the first film’s tree demon and its ghostly underlings.
The Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy represents the height of Hong Kong cinema’s inventiveness, deploying an array of spectacular special effects, jaw-dropping fight choreography and luscious cinematography to deliver its singular blend of otherworldly scares, thrilling action and poignant love story.

Futureworld

Following the success of Westworld, director Richard T. Heffron expanded Michael Crichton's techno-nightmare with Futureworld - a sleek, conspiracy-laced slice of 1970s science fiction that trades frontier thrills for post-Watergate paranoia in the age of automation.
When reporters Chuck Browning (Peter Fonda, Easy Rider) and Tracy Ballard (Blythe Danner, The Great Santini) are invited to inspect the newly reopened Delos resort, they find a futuristic paradise promising safe, sanitized entertainment. But beneath the polished surface, troubling inconsistencies begin to emerge - and as suspicion turns to terror, the pair uncover a sinister conspiracy with consequences far beyond the park itself.
Stylish, suspenseful and packed with all-star turns - including the return of Yul Brynner's implacable Gunslinger - Futureworld spins a compelling web of sci-fi intrigue, serving as a timely reminder that progress always has its price.

The Last Boy Scout

From the star of Die Hard, the director of Top Gun, the writer of Lethal Weapon and the producer of 48 Hrs., comes The Last Boy Scout, an era-defining explosion of cynical wit and extreme violence!
Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis) is a burned out P.I. who hates the world and seemingly everything in it. Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans) is a former all-star quarterback, busted out of the game on gambling charges. When Jimmy's girlfriend, Cory (Halle Berry), is brutally murdered despite hiring Joe to protect her, both men become embroiled in a mystery that will lead them deep into a shady world of politics, blackmail and sports gambling on their quest to discover who killed Cory and why, and maybe find a little redemption for themselves along the way.
With gags and violence as brutal as each other, this is screenwriter Shane Black at his darkest, pushing the buddy action formula as far as it can go while director Tony Scott ups the 90s action-thriller ante to deliver a nihilistic neo-noir masterpiece drenched in smoke and neon. Once seen, never forgotten, The Last Boy Scout is back and it's looking so good you'll dance a jig!

Re: A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy
The first film was such a formative experience for me as a kid. One of the first foreign films I remember seeing. I videotaped it and must have watched it a dozen times. I think I saw the second film but I have no memory of it. The third will be completely new to me.

Re: A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy
My recommendation is not to watch these back to back. My first viewing I saw them really close together, and by the time I got to the third I was exhausted with the formula. Seeing them again later, but more spread out, I was better able to appreciate the sequels, the third especially. The movies are recapitulations rather than developments or extensions. They replay each other with small variations in focus and numerous callbacks. They’re not nostalgic exactly, but they do play on your fondness for previous entries.
The first is the most balanced. The second leans more into the creature feature aspect. The third leans more into the romance. I’d say the third is the funniest, the second the craziest, but the first the all-around best. These don’t resemble King Hu in style, but you can see the influence of Legend of the Mountain.

Re: Cujo
I have never actually seen the film adaptation of this, so looking forward to this release, though have read the book and it features one of King's more interesting crossover moments between otherwise unconnected stories that suggests that everything is taking place in the same world. I will spoiler tag this as it deals with the fate of one of the characters:
The director of this, Lewis Teague, had quite a run of animal-themed horror films in the early 80s with the John Sayles scripted Alligator, then Cujo, then the other Stephen King adaptation, Cat's Eye, which actually features the titular feline as the good animal trying to save a little girl (played by another E.T. alumni, Drew Barrymore) from having her soul sucked out by little goblin creatures, from what I can recall.
Then of course he did Navy SEALS in 1990, but I don't think that was about actual seals...
Spoiler
Where the Sheriff Bannerman character, who utilises Johnny Smith's psychic visions of the future to help catch a serial killer in the middle section of The Dead Zone, turns up again here to immediately be killed off as the expendable victim of the rabies-raddled St. Bernard! If only he could have seen his horrible fate ahead of time!

I read the book as a kid as well but all I remember is the early parts of the book are concerned with a breakfast cereal that inadvertently dyed consumers’ stools blood red. I suspect this detour will not be found in the film adaptation!

Re: The Last Boy Scout
I’m surprised this has any cachet, unless it’s carryover goodwill for Shane Black’s other films. It’s been a while since I’ve seen this but it pretty much killed Damon Wayans’ film trajectory and he and Willis are helpless to save such a mean-spirited and utterly “un fun” action movie.

Shame they didn't make any extras about the film's tortured editing process, which is the only thing interesting about it. I guess I'm glad that the uncensored violent scenes will presumably be made available, but does anyone have fond memories of this movie?
EDIT: There was no reason to speculate. This is a Tony Scott movie, so of course half the Letterboxd highbies love it

Re: The Last Boy Scout
Oh, I love this film as well. Scott was at his peak with Revenge (the theatrically released cut, which is on Tubi but not Blu-Ray), this and True Romance. One of the most genuinely shocking opening scenes I’ve watched in what is ostensibly a comedy, and there are just so many great moments, particularly when we’re first introduced to Bruce Willis.Never Cursed wrote: Fri Jul 31, 2026 10:37 pm Shame they didn't make any extras about the film's tortured editing process, which is the only thing interesting about it. I wish the preview cut could’ve been included in full instead of just highlights of what WB demanded cuts of
I’m amazed that Shane Black continues to work so much in the #MeToo era given that he was sued for viciously assaulting a former partner some years back

The opening scene is definitely shocking but I personally think it's also hilarious, in a black-comic (pun intended) way. It's the reaction shots that really put it over for me. I remember nothing else about the movie other than the opening credits (also hilarious), which maybe isn't a great sign. But I'll give it a rewatch when this comes out.

I'm not complaining but it's odd that this set with three films in 4K is only selling at $49.99 while single titles like The Frighteners in 4K are $33.99.

I'm having difficulty playing the first audio track - I can barely hear the sound no matter how high I turn up the volume on my TV. Is there something I can do to fix this, or is it a TV/player/soundbar issue that can't be solved?
