Disappointing was looking to grab this in July. Might have to grab it second hand before prices get jacked up.

Shoah is now listed as being OOP after being marked as unavailable for a very long time. I’m sure this is temporary given that it looks like Janus still owns the rights.

Interestingly enough, the film is also no longer on the channel. Not sure how long it hasn’t been on there.

I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to re-release it and add All I Had Was Nothingness to it.

I remember the comparisons favoring the Eureka/MOC edition being preferable to the Criterion. A quick Google search says the Eureka was encoded by FIM and had better colour timing & extras. I also think this might have been one of those television series with a frame rate issue. The Eureka repress also looks to be OOP, so maybe a new 4k resto is on the horizon.

Eureka adds an extra film (which was released by Cohen in the States) and benefits from being spaced out over an extra disc, but Criterion has more extras and there are a couple of people in the dedicated thread that say the colours on the Criterion match the prints that they saw in theaters (obviously though one should never use memory as a basis for these types of things).

Let's hope that Criterion add a extra disc and space the film out whenever they decide to re-release this, as well as adding All I Had Was Nothingness to it.

I had both and went with Eureka's set because the compression artifacts on Criterion's disc were really bad. It was so egregious that it was distracting - you'd have this Tetris game going on with the walls in the background while someone's talking. I don't even remember comparing the colors because it was such an easy choice based on that factor alone.

Two Eclipse sets OOP: #5 (Samuel Fuller) and #12 (Proletariat Trilogy).

I hope this is a sign of Fuller in 4K. The Steel Helmet and The Big Red One are really dying for it.

So basically it's mainly been the DVD's for Janus-owned titles that have been going OOP recently, presumably because they are going to upgrade them to bluray (at least that's what I'm hoping anyways).

I doubt we'll see the Fuller set in 4K and will likely be upgraded to blu like the Saura and Lubitsch sets.

From your lips to God's ears, guys, since the Fullers are all Fox. This would be a dream upgrade for me since this is my most cherished Eclipse set along with Shimizu.

All the films in the Fuller set are with Janus, so an upgrade should be no problem. The Big Red One (which isn't in the set) is owned by WB, so I would venture that Criterion or Arrow would be able to grab the rights to it.

Yes, but the extended re-edit of The Big Red One was only completed in SD. So there's an entire post-production workflow for that version that needs starting again from scratch.

If you’re able to play region B discs, there’s always Curzon’s Aki Kaurismaki Collection box set. I think it’s only missing Fallen Leaves and I Hired a Contract Killer.

I had no idea the Eclipse Fullers were with Janus. When did that happen?

Re The Big Red One: I'd happily accept a nice BD of the Director's Cut if that's the best the elements for it permit but a 4K would be the chef's kiss.

My heart still aches that the best version of Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, the Preview cut, wasn't in good enough shape supposedly for a UHD but the theatrical and the Schickel-Spottiswoode cuts were.

My understanding (although I’d love to be wrong) is that the longer cut of The Big Red One, like Ken Russell’s semi-restoration of The Devils, has only ever existed on standard definition video, so even a HD version would be a huge and unavoidably expensive undertaking.

and the Mubi release of Fallen Leaves is awesome, so a very reasonable supplement to the Curzon box, which is indeed back in print and the way to go

Criterion would no doubt use exactly the same masters anyway: they’re director-approved, not broken, and don’t need fixing.

I do not know when they went to Janus, but the Eclipse Fullers were never with Fox. They were all independent releases through Lippert Pictures and licensed through Kit Parker for the Eclipse set. Fuller started with Fox on the next film, Fixed Bayonets.

I learned something newv today. I'd thought all along those were already Fox pictures. Thank you for clarifying!
