BAFTAs were wild: Penn won, Taylor did not, and Chalamet was beat by someone not even up at the Oscars

Best Actor is now a question mark. There’s a non-zero chance SAG goes to Jordan and then we’d really have a dartboard year in the category

Seems like the BAFTA voters hated Marty Supreme, but I think it has done better among American audiences anyway. Wunmi Mosaku's win (for a nothing performance in a quite substandard movie, too) might well have been more national politics (see also: Emily Watson's nom for her 4 minutes of screen time in Hamnet and Carey Mulligan's for a movie that doesn't exist).

Also, the real-life guy who the Best Actor winner played (a Tourette's Syndrome activist) screamed the N-word at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo on stage. Not blaming him for this, it just seemed to unfortunately overshadow some of the rest of the ceremony

Actually The Ballad of Wallis Island is far better than a movie named The Ballad of Wallis Island has any right to be

If Hawke’s movie had at least made it to Best Picture I’d half be expecting him to Art Carney it

I'm happy for her. I'm a lot more surprised by Keri Russell winning Best Actress TV Drama over Rhea Seahorn.

And Michael B Jordan just won Actor, too. Seems like a bunch of the acting categories are just as much toss-ups as the writer/director/picture categories are done deals.

Just checked the betting and Wunmi Mosaku and Teyana Taylor have the same odds more or less for Supporting Actress, with Amy Madigan just behind, so this is going to be the tightest race.

Predix
Picture
Will Win: One Battle After Another
Should Win: Would be equally happy with One Battle After Another or Marty Supreme
Worst in show: While other movies (Hamnet) in the category were worse than it, honestly, fuck Sinners the most this time around. Racist piece-of-shit actioner with a pathetic, cloying, manipulative awards season sob story built around exploiting a man with a neurological disorder. An awards-season villain if I have EVER encountered one, and worse than Emilia Perez because that film self-destructed most of its potential to win awards once people saw it/its star's Twitter feed. Fuck everyone associated with this stupid, bigoted movie and its stupid, bigoted campaign.

Director
Will Win: PTA
Should Win: PTA (lifetime achievement/"sorry for shutting you out 4 times"), Josh Safdie (on the merits)

Should Win: Sirat
Worst in show: The Voice of Hind Rajab, but this is the only category where all five nominees are at worst okay

Anim. Feature
Will Win: KPop Demon Hunters
Should Win: Little Amélie or the Character of Rain. I haven't seen it, but, y'know, just out of spite.
Worst in show: KPop Demon Hunters. Watched a quarter of it and DNFed. First movie I've intentionally done that for in years. (Not seen: all other nominees)

I'm very out of touch, but any read on where Academy voters are re: OBAA's political content? I can't decide if it's a hurt or hinder thing. One one hand, it's very topical and there is some promotional value to being politically engaged (the Clooney approach). On the other hand, I could imagine they rather not make more waves these days and sit this one out, and position Hollywood content as something of a welcome distraction. Not to mention all the mergers and industry upheaval that has a political bent. Curious how it plays out.

My preferences. Unfortunately, I don't think I have Best International Film, Best Actress, or Best Supporting Actor this year for what will win. Everything else I picked has a chance. I saw all of the features, but not the Animated or the Shorts
Spoiler
Best Picture - One Battle After Another

Best Director - Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another)

Original Screenplay - Sinners

Adapted Screenplay - One Battle After Another

Actor in a Leading Role - Michael B. Jordan (Sinners)

Actress in a Leading Role - Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You)

Actress in Supporting Role - Amy Madigan (Weapons)

Actor in Supporting Role - Benicio del Toro (One Battle After Another)

International Feature Film - It Was Just an Accident (I could have given this to Sirat any other day)

Documentary Feature - The Perfect Neighbor

Cinematography - Train Dreams

Film Editing - One Battle After Another

Production Design - Marty Supreme

Costume Design - Frankenstein

Makeup and Hairstyling - Frankenstein

Visual Effects - Sinners

Sound - F1
I'm going to go against the popular grain here and say that I felt this was a very weak year for American film. OBAA is really the only movie here I will ever revisit.

EDIT: Also, I left off Casting. I don't fully comprehend how that works from an audience perspective. Has there ever been a well-revered and awarded movie where everyone touted it as a masterpiece, sans the casting? For example, The Godfather is incredible, but Pacino is so miscast and has no chemistry with Duvall? Has anyone ever said that?

Maybe you're joking, but the producer and studio head said that even before the film was made.

I haven't paid any attention to the precursors this year, which of course means this chalk bracket will be my best-ever set of picks:
Spoiler
Best Picture:
One Battle After Another

Best Director:
Paul Thomas Anderson

Best Actor:
Chalamet

Best Actress:
Jessie Buckley

Best Supporting Actor:
Sean Penn

Best Supporting Actress:
Teyana Taylor

Original Screenplay:

Casting:

Cinematography:
Sinners

Costume Design:
Frankenstein

Editing:
OBAA

Makeup & Hairstyling:
Frankenstein

Production Design:
Frankenstein

Score:
Sinners

Song:
"Golden"

Sound:
F1 (never bet against a car movie in this category)

VFX:
Avatar

Animated Feature:
K-Pop Demon Hunters

Doco Feature:
The Perfect Neighbor

International Feature:
Sentimental Value

Animated Short:
Butterfly

Doco Short:

At least Best Actress seems like a lock for the first time in ages. Supporting Actress may be the lucky victim of my "will never get this category correct" curse this year.
