We were just talking recently in this thread about the unlikelihood of a new restoration of Les enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise) and now here it is. Fingers crossed it will be at least a slight improvement over the last one.

Interesting that Estonian Film Institute has managed to snuck in there two years in a row, last year with Naerata ometi (Smile at Last) and now with "Hukkunud Alpinisti" hotell (Dead Mountaineer's Hotel). If only they weren't so reluctant on licensing out their library and working with external partners. I found an interview with Deaf Crocodile guys where they mentioned it took them six years to convince Tallinnfilm/EFI.

Any indication whether this is the theatrical version or the longer director's cut?

Note that Burnett's "director's cut" (or preferred version) is actually shorter than the original theatrical release - significantly so since the 2007 re-edit is only 78 minutes vs. the theatrical release's 115 minutes.

Cheers Roger – an embarrassing memory lapse on my part! I've only seen the theatrical cut and thought it was great, so it's good to hear that that version has been restored for posterity too.

The 4K restoration of Happiness has been announced too: https://www.lidocinemas.com.au/movies/happiness-1998

This is just a small selection of what will be screening, btw – the full program will be announced in March. I'm pretty excited for this one; the programming of this festival is always top-notch, with a pretty eclectic mixture of classics and obscurities (often from cinematically underrepresented countries).

It seems like none of the films of Hans-Jürgen Syberberg have been restored yet? A big boxset of his German Trilogy would be amazing.

They have been restored by Film Shift. Unsure on the specifics though

Thanks for this fine information source!

Film Shift also seems to have restored many Harun Farocki titles, plus films by Angela Schanelec, Christian Petzold, Sohrab Shahid Saless, Fred Kelemen and other directors. All titles listed at link above.

Rushes from Orson Welles´ Merchant of Venice, restored in 2025 by the Cinemathèque Francaise:
https://www.cinematheque.fr/henri/film/ ... bzZmGDU0dg

Film materials deposited by Oja Kodar. Text says that Kodar has confided part of her film archive to the CF.
Perhaps more unfinished work has been moved from the Munich Film Museum to the CF?
