I'm pretty sure this was the first time I ever heard anyone say "fuck" on British television—in a classic instance of the Streisand Effect two decades before it would be named, I watched The Gambler specifically because Mary Whitehouse complained about it, helpfully in advance of the broadcast.

After it had been publicly pulled from broadcast a few weeks earlier and rescheduled. The stated reason was the language, but as you say it still had several "fucks" left in when it was finally shown. It replaced a scheduled screening of The Klansman which has never since been shown on British TV. I wondered if the kerfuffle over The Gambler was a cover for removing The Klansman from broadcast but I have it on good authority that that was a coincidence.

Back in 1974, the BBFC were still occasionally cutting "cunt", even from X-certificate films, and that's what was removed from The Gambler, the word heard during the opening credits.

Previous BD releases from Eureka and FM were from 2k master(s ?), and when Canal released it on UHD SDR in France, it turned out the whole movie was from a 2k master too, save for its last 8 minutes... sourced from a 35mm exploitatiln print and strongly DNRed.
I remember this weird situation, which was first brought up in that thread. I wonder what could have been going on behind the scene. Could it be a 4K scan/ 2K restoration situation where they went back to the raw scan and produced a 4K master? And for whatever reason they found it necessary to source a different print for the ending? Otherwise I couldn't figure out why releasing something on UHD from a 2K master, and it's been done by three labels from different regions now.

I'm sure there will be much clamoring for The Devils but, if they now have a Warner deal, VS seem like the most likely outfit to give us an HD release of Russell's Lisztomania.

I can also envision Cinematographe giving us $40 bells and whistles editions of Star 80 and De Palma's Get to Know Your Rabbit

Without saying too much, I was told someone is releasing Liztomania possibly on 4K and it isn’t Vinegar Syndrome.

Yeah. Probably Leatherface (1990).

That is one that I could see Arrow asking for/may have (VS would also likely be interested in Leatherface), but it isn't the one I know about. I'll just say it isn't a horror movie and leave it at that.

I still think Hawks’ the Thing is likely coming from someone, if just because they know fans of the Carpenter version will buy it

This isn't anything new but the RRP of $63 for the LE of The Gambler (and $65 for the LE + stickers which already sold out today) is nuts. Yeah, it was worse during the Laserdisc days, but I'm not surprised people are taking advantage of the lower pre-order rate while it lasts. If Married to the Mob is the second Cinematographe announcement on Wednesday, I might not be able to resist the temptation (though Radiance are announcing their April slate on the same day, so maybe...?).

My best guess at the moment is that there is a misunderstanding about how much of this master is 4k, that having had the last minutes scanned in 4k created a confusion and turned the marketing of this as being entirely in 4k, and that some people either don't know better or are taking advantage of the confusion to over-sell something like this on a UHD.
(I compared the Studio Canal BD with the Eureka and the FM BDs, and the movie was shown at a Lyon Film Festival advertised as "from a 4k restoration for Studio Canal by Augustus Rome and VDM, in a never-seen-before long version"; I compared the cuts, I still have no idea where the differences are supposed to be, as the main difference is that the credits play slightly different).

From Mifunefan on the other forum
I know we were 99.9% sure they're putting out Married to the Mob based on hints, but I can now verify 100% that will be CIN-028.

With Radiance releasing Cutter's Way, there is a chance that they will handle the 4K UHD for Married to the Mob in the UK, no?

Pink Line have announced their third Hisayasu Satô boxset.

It contains:
Kyrie Eleison
Rafureshia
Turtle Vision

And the usual commentaries for each film, Satô interviews for each film, and the third part of his Tokyo locations tour.

These three have been much requested, particularly Turtle Vision. I’m very happy!

If Radiance have it (and it'd really be a no-brainer commercially), it'd make sense to announce on the same day as Vinegar Syndrome. If they're teasing an American film Monday or Tuesday, I'm really hoping that this is it. I know they have no obligation to do so, but if it wasn't coming in April, it'd still be nice if they confirmed that they do have it for the UK. I'd frankly prefer a Radiance edition over the Cinematographe but I'm thrilled it's coming either way. This is one of those comedies I'll happily rewatch regularly until I die.

One of the biggest understatements I’ve seen on here recently! For starters: the MSRP won’t be north of $60 USD

I said this elsewhere but genuinely, we know I have a lot of distaste for this label and for the dude who does Cinematographe, but he can do one thing right by me and bring out a Star 80 release. it's perfect for his line - Criterion is never gonna touch that with a ten foot pole, but we know Vinegar Syndrome and their other little labels aren't afraid of being utterly tasteless and disrespectful (see also Last Tango in Paris)...so it would be great if they did release it. may be a surprise to some but I do actually want to see a release of that

back to bashing them - I would be kinda let down if Radiance announce Cutter's Way and Married to the Mob in back to back months, personally, but I do think of course they probably will get to doing it since they handled the first UK release, and hopefully they do, we should all want to buy from them over VS/etc

What's wrong with Justin LaLiberty? He's seems like a pretty chill person based off every time I've talked to him on the Cinematographe thread. Did I miss something?

Justin's fine. ryan and a couple of other members here disagree with VS's business practice of asking boutique stores not to stock competing UK releases, even going as far as threatening said stores with a ban on future VS product if they don't comply with VS's request. This might be a thing again if Radiance do have Married and VS doesn't want Orbit, diabolik etc to sell the UK edition. If that turns out to be the case, I'll either order direct from Radiance if there is a second title I can pair with Married to offset the shipping charges, or Grindhouse get my business.

Last time this came up, VS caught so much static for it that they had to do a public make-up session. If it happens again, big unforced error by VS

Bashing Radiance for potentially releasing Cutter's Way and Married back to back, if that's what transpires on Wednesday, is just silly, ryan, with all due respect. Even with VS's high RRP which goes up even further for importing to the UK (even at the lower sale price of $43 which I reckon is what Married will go for on VS's site on Wednesday), Radiance would want to maximize sales to UK buyers and even US customers like me who would only buy the Cinematographe if Fran confirmed that Married won't be coming from them. If Radiance have Married, it makes no sense to leave it until later unless they have additional items planned which necessitates a later release date. We don't know yet if it's even coming and even if it is on the April slate, what if they also have, say, a BD of A Page of Madness? Fran pretty much always finds a healthy balance each month, whether it includes Cutter's Way and Married in subsequent months or not.

Rafueshia was one of the three Hisayasu Sato films that Artsmagic released on DVD in the US in the mid 2000s (the other two being Survey Map of a Paradise Lost and Love-Sex=Infinity), but I do not think the others had received a release otherwise.

Famously it was still going on as late as with Bridget Jones's Diary in 2001! Famously because it was overdubbed in the film itself for a milder swearword when first released on DVD, but unfortunately nobody appeared to check the commentary track, on which it was heard loud and clearly in all of its glory!

Anyway, I'm glad about The Gambler, since I can now retire my recorded from the TV in 1997 VHS of it, which was the last time it appeared on the BBC! Since then we've only had the Mark Wahlberg-starring remake to have to make do with.

Now we're cooking with gas! Cinematographe's editions, despite the copiousness of their extras, don't really go big with them. But I'd love extensive interviews with Mariel Hemingway and Eric Roberts on such an edition. And possibly an interview with Teresa Carpenter, who wrote the Village Voice article on which the film is based.

Star 80 is no. 1 on my 'realistic' wish list with the Warners deal with VS. (The Devils is mu ultimate no. 1 but that is not going to happen and The Devils doesn't really fit into the VS wheelhouse anyway).

I've seen Star 80 countless times since it's cinema release and it never fails to rattle me. And speaking of Bob Fosse, I finally got around to watching Fosse/Verdon and wow. Sam Rockwell & Michelle Williams were beyond extraordinary in their respective roles. I didn't much care for the structure of the limited series but their performances more than made up for it.
