I suppose the breakdown doesn't even have to be fully one or the other, i.e. the sob stories about his past and conscience are a ploy, but the desperate desire and pleas to see his newborn son are sincere. It's that crack in the exterior, that kernel of humanity that I think is important for Panahi or that he might feel he needs.
I don't think a movie so formally concerned with offscreen space and obstructed views is telling us that anything is plainly revealed here. Spoiler
I saw what zedz did: A torturer uses the tools in his box. Whatever mix of truth and fiction gets the desired result.
I liked this a lot, but was confused about the setting. Why go out of your way to put unveiled female extras in a half dozen different shots in public places throughout the film? Early on I thought this must be some Iranian exile community; but then it became clear that it is definitely set in Tehran.

It’s not that there has been a change by the government at all. You asked me for solutions or words of advice, and I really don’t know the situation here. You know the words of advice or the solutions here. We can only warn you about the signs we see and their consequences.
Watched this last night and was really taken with it. However, I wanted to know a little bit of the historical table-setting for the context of the film. Apparently, Vahid is Azarbaijani and I assume most of his assembled cohort throughout the film are as well. At first, I assumed they were Shah-loving Iranians against the '79 Islamic Revolution, but they are far too young for that reading. I know of a little ethnic strife between the Iranians and the Azaris in the north, but nothing too specific. Can anyone offer any information on the background of the characters and if the film is referring to a specific incident and political struggle? Vahid mentions his wife was taken in the original incident, so that tells me due to his age, that this original campaign against our main characters probably happened in the 21st century.

Nice to see this one coming out so soon after release (and on UHD). The only disappointment is that they don't add some historical context bonus giving people an overview of the history (esp. US involvement) from Mosaddegh to the present.
