Re: Recent Film Restorations
The latest round of CNC funded restorations includes another Michel Deville film (La Femme en bleu), Raul Ruiz's Days in the Country, and Tati's Parade. The most costly restoration appears to actually be of two films - Mon Coeur au ralenti and La Madone des Sleepings, both based on Maurice Dekobra novels and directed by Marco de Gastyne though the latter film was mostly directed by Maurice Gleize after Gastyne fell ill.
Gastyne thankfully recovered and went on to direct La Merveilleuse vie de Jeanne d'Arc, which I would sorely love to see on one of these restoration lists one day...

"The film was reconstructed and restored by Renée Lichtig at the Cinémathèque française in 1983-1986 from an incomplete 35mm nitrate negative and a condensed 17.5mm reduction print previously owned by Simone Genevois. A new restoration was scheduled to begin in 2012."

Re: Recent Film Restorations
I'm not sure an 80s restoration really counts for much in the present day but that comment about 2012 is intriguing. Any ideas if it happened? I've not seen anything regarding it being screened in recent years

Re: Recent Film Restorations
I would love to see a Borzage silent box. (UHD would make it even better). A search for other 4K restorations turned up Man's Castle & History Is Made At Night. The only other of his silents I see a restoration for is The Valley Of Silent Men, so I guess this was just a resto for Academy Award wins and not part of a broader project of restoring his films or has anyone heard otherwise?...then of course there's Fox/Disney to contend with.Stefan Andersson wrote: Wed Nov 19, 2025 5:49 pm 7th Heaven showing in L.A. Re: Recent Film Restorations
I posted before about Street Angel but here it is again because it's important they get the best and latest restoration from MoMA, not Fox:
I mentioned this in a different thread, but Twentieth Century Fox funded a 4K restoration of Street Angel from nitrate elements held by MoMA, which also premiered it in 2019, and on Sunday, MoMA unveiled an "updated" restoration. Similar to 7th Heaven, they were able to continue their own work on the previous 4K restoration because Street Angel also entered the public domain as of this year.
With that in mind, perhaps there's real hope that MoMA's latest restorations for both films can see a physical release, especially if Disney/Fox no longer has a say.

I suppose La truite will be sourced from the same thing that the French BD : https://testsbluray.com/2022/04/25/test ... la-truite/
I've seen La dentellière in DCP last year, and it looked like a 25yo HD master, despite tech details stating some work done in 2016 and then some more in 2020.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
Solaris, Mirror and Stalker now all have 4K masters available and have received screenings in Russia.
Slight differences in framing and grading compared to the previous 2K masters, noticeably in Stalker's controversial monochrome scenes. The compression is pretty bad but you can check out the new restorations on Mosfilm's Youtube channel.
Some fans on Russian forums are claiming AI was used which would be devastating if true but I didn't notice anything while randomly checking scenes, so at the very least it's not glaringly obvious.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
It feels increasingly necessary to preserve good old 2K restorations before the arrival of generative AI. Film restoration is heading to a terrifying place. I'll hold on to my Criterion editions dearly.

Now I feel (slightly) vindicated in my laziness to resell OOP titles before they get released on a new format, missing out on making some $$$.andyli wrote: Wed Nov 26, 2025 12:25 pm It feels increasingly necessary to preserve good old 2K restorations before the arrival of generative AI. (My original Wong Kar Wai blus helped with that too).

I’ve held onto many DVDs (e.g. the Criterion releases of Solaris and Do the Right Thing) as a result of atrocious color changes in HD “upgrades”andyli wrote: Wed Nov 26, 2025 12:25 pm It feels increasingly necessary to preserve good old 2K restorations before the arrival of generative AI. The Criterion transfer was already from a 4K master. This trailer looks very similar to that so it could be the same restoration.

Re: Recent Film Restorations
Both Vinegar Syndrome's 2019 release and Indicator's recent disc were sourced from the same 4K restoration done by Academy and Film Foundation with Hobson/Lucas funding. Vinegar Syndrome's blurb reads "NEW 4K RESTORATION FROM VARIOUS 35MM PRE-PRINT ELEMENTS" but Chris' review goes into detail, mentioning the 35mm OCN as the primary source and a fine grain master positive to fill in the gaps.
