Are you sure that this is from the Blu-ray and not a poorly tonemapped HDR-to-SDR-converted screenshot of the 4k disc? Usually, caps like that look similar to what I see here.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean it's in 4K. The color version of Basquiat was a 4K restoration, but it's not on the 4K disc.

When I pressed play, That's exactly what I thought it looked like! And yes, I'm 100% sure. That's from my personal copy. I posted those photos.

I don't have much of a trained eye, I guess.
What's a gamma issue?
What am I looking for?
It looks ok to my eyes?

If you click the picture, toggling it, it should say Criterion in the top left. You'll see that version of the image is almost completely flat grey, with very little contrast, including on the credits which should appear bright white.

Sadly, in this case, no training is required, it's horrific. It really ought to be replaced, but we shall see.

It's the same problem they had with the initial Citizen Kane blu-ray after the first thirty minutes.

Oh wow, OK, I wasn't clicking on the image in the link.
I just saw the one image that looked fine.
clicking between the two shows an obvious difference.

Another member at the other forum confirmed the issue, also that it’s only concerning the BD.

Which of course is the other "problem"...that they didn't bother to squeeze the 26 minute short onto the 4K discs...but I guess it mirrors the Carlotta set in that respect. I'd settle for it just not looking like hell.

Carlotta has Les mistons on Les 400 coups' UHD, though Les mistons is advertised as a HD restoration anyway.

Indeed, thanks for the corrective. The Carlotta is 4k OR Blu, so everything is on the UHD discs as well. I was initially thrown off because they didn't include Mistons in the combined run time for the films in the specs, but I guess they deem it an "extra".

According to Criterion their Les mistons is from a new 4K restoration so I assume it's a selling point if a minor one. But they seem to have negated whatever improvement that 4k restoration may bring by fucking the encode up.

Yes, I indeed retrieved it in the details for the extras. The total runtime is limited to the Doinel movies, ie the 5 movies (including Antoine et Colette), but without Les mistons.
I've tried to retrieve the tech details, but all I found on my side is a HD restoration, while DVD Classik mentions a 2k one. Criterion might be using a newer one (in which case I'm curious as to the tech details), or maybe it's a mistake and they screwed up the encode because it was SDR ?

I didn't realize caps for Carlotta's set is up on caps-a-holic. We'll probably have to wait and see how Criterion's encode matches up, especially when it comes to grain and texture, but the color grading is sure to stir up debate as that's baked into the restoration. Unfortunately, Stolen Kisses doesn't look anything like the 35mm screenings I've caught over the years - the Artificial Eye grading seemed to be in the same ballpark as those screenings but the new 4K restoration is drenched in an all-too-familiar yellowish hue. Even the skies look yellow. Extremely frustrating because it's clearly a much better scan of the film elements.

HDR screenshot comparison for The 400 Blows by fkid between the Carlotta and Criterion 4K discs. Criterion not just improved the original master’s elevated gamma levels but adjusted the framing here and there. This should be a gorgeous upgrade.

Am I nuts because I think the Carlotta shots look better?
I see a brighter image and more grain.
