The hold-up there is due to Alberta Hunter's blues songs not having been cleared. She died intestate, which certainly wouldn't help. I saw the film at the BFI Southbank about a dozen years ago in an ex-UK-distribution print which was fading in places. Apparently the film is definitely in need of restoration.

Another I'm aware of is American Hot Wax, directed by Floyd Mutrux. I'm told the cost to clear the music rights for homevideo would cost more than the film's entire dudget at the time. It's a biopic of DJ Alan Freed so as you can guess it's more or less wall-to-wall pop and rock music. As it was a big commercial flop at the time, I can understand why this wouldn't be a priority.

If streaming is legally equivalent to TV broadcast as far as music rights are concerned, I could live with films like this being available to stream in decent HD versions, but in these and many cases they aren't. Remember My Name has been shown a few times recently on Talking Pictures TV in the UK so that's something, but American Hot Wax was last on British TV in the 1990s. Plenty of other examples I could name, and don't get me started on films seemingly only available now with music rights replacements unless you have a vanishingly rare chance to see the film on a 35mm print (e.g. Medium Cool).

It makes you wish there was a philanthropic millionaire cineaste out there.

As far as these things go, the fact that we actually got Sleuth on Blu-ray in France a couple years ago means nothing is guaranteed to be off the table forever, but that may have been a once in a lifetime miracle

American Hot Wax is a great example. One of those films loaded with popular music that came out just before studios had the foresight to clear licenses for home video. It never even screens in 35mm. I think a 16mm print was exhibited here in Los Angeles some years back

You’d be surprised by how dysfunctional the relationships between companies operating under the same umbrella can be. When MTV and VH1 were in their heydays, one often wouldn’t give the other access to certain media they requested.

while I'm just pointlessly bumping this thread to agree, I will say 2025 was a fairly Mexican-less slate across all labels. only Criterion's El (which is worth at least 10 releases for me personally) and Deep Crimson leap out. but yes, I'm kinda surprised Indicator didn't return to the Mexican well this year, especially given how much they hyped up how well the titles have done. I'm gonna hope it's a matter of restorations as opposed to no future plans for more of these titles, but hopefully we hear more from the camp soon
