I wish it was the series of Strangers With Candy. The feature has its moments, but is just so poorly directed

Shout Studios wrote:It's time for full-throttle action and exhilarating movie adventures this summer as Shout! Studios unveils HONG KONG CINEMA CLASSICS™, a new entertainment label spotlighting a treasure trove of Hong Kong's most captivating and cinematic masterpieces on digital entertainment platforms in 4K and definitive-edition physical releases (4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray) for collectors' home entertainment shelves.
Hong Kong cinema in the '80s and '90s, renowned for its thrilling action choreography, distinctive visual styles, and emotional storytelling, represents a remarkable era in cinematic history, whose crime thrillers, martial arts classics, and action films, in particular, have left an indelible mark on Hollywood, profoundly influencing everything from Quentin Tarantino's movies to the iconic Matrix and John Wick franchises. Among these are many acclaimed and popular early works by renowned filmmakers John Woo, Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark, Corey Yuen, Gordon Chan, Johnnie To, and internationally renowned actors Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun-Fat, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Leslie Cheung, and Tony Leung Ka-fai. Many of these highly sought-after movies from Shout!'s Golden Princess library and seminal Hong Kong classics have been dormant and out–of–print for decades outside of Asia.
For the upcoming HONG KONG CINEMA CLASSICS releases, Shout! The video and audio have been restored, and the subtitles have been newly translated. With fans in mind, Shout! Studios is currently producing a variety of bonus content for each physical media release for this numbered and deluxe home entertainment series.

Re: Shout! Factory / Scream Factory
Thrilled we're getting Peking Opera Blues this soon, and City of Fire in August. Going to be a great summer. Skipping the Jet Li set as I have all of those from 88 already except Bodyguard which I didn't care for. If their Fist of Legend release has no DNR and is released individually in a year or so, I'd upgrade that one.

So frustrating that Alexander can’t include ALL of the cuts, or at least the Director’s Cut and Final iterations

Amazing news about the Hong Kong releases! Interesting that Peking Opera Blues is getting a physical release before any of those John Woo titles.. I'm not complaining as it's easily my favorite of this bunch, but it's so far from where I'd expect Shout's priorities to lie that I wonder if they weren't able to get physical rights for the Woo films at all?

Re: Shout! Factory / Scream Factory
Over the moon for those. But I’m also hoping the Better Tomorrow releases have better sound mixes or at least the original mono. The restored soundtracks on current releases replace the gunfire sounds, and do it really badly. Machine guns are dubbed over with pistol shots at points (you can even hear the original gunshots underneath), and at other points gunshot sounds are missing entirely. The sounds used are flat and tinny to boot, when the original sounds had heft to them. It’s really bad, especially given that Woo uses gun sounds as crucial parts of how he builds rhythm in his action.Finch wrote:Thrilled we're getting Peking Opera Blues this soon, and City of Fire in August. Considering who Shout Factory recruits to work on their releases, I'm hoping they'll include a mono track ripped from the laserdisc. I also hope the fix the color grading done to the most recent 4K restoration.Mr Sausage wrote: Mon Apr 28, 2025 4:05 pmOver the moon for those. They're really going all out with the big hits for their initial slate. No complaints as all the versions of these have either been subpar up to this point.

Re: Shout! Factory / Scream Factory
Am pretty sure they have physical rights for the entire catalogue including the Woos but I believe they were planning a theatrical rollout for the most famous titles which would include the Woos. I actually appreciate that they're mixing it up a little and not front load it with the most obvious choices.

Yep. They’re likely spending additional time with creating supplements for them, tooFinch wrote: Mon Apr 28, 2025 5:09 pm Am pretty sure they have physical rights for the entire catalogue including the Woos but I believe they were planning a theatrical rollout for the most famous titles which would include the Woos. Waiting for decades for these in proper versions (and speculating loudly) and then they all drop within a few months of each other.

Re: Shout! Factory / Scream Factory
Supposedly Shout has made a deal with one UK label for the entire Golden Princess catalogue and Metropolitan Film in France. Some Bluray.com members said Fran Simeoni confirmed (on X or the Radiance discord?) that the GP licences are going to be with one UK label only. So if all of this is true, it can only be Arrow. Can't think of any other UK label with deep enough pockets to sublicense everything from Shout.
PS.: Frank Djeng made and then deleted a reply on social media to someone where he confirmed some deals had already been done and are officially going to be announced at Cannes.

The opening cap doesn't bode well for the color grading (but we'll see with something surer to be representative).

Re: Shout! Factory / Scream Factory
I think this is perfectly fine as a gift set or a starter set for someone just getting into Bava who wants (most of) the essentials in one place. Why someone thought some of these films need FOUR commentaries is beyond me, but it’s nice that Bava is getting the attention he deserves.

I thought I remembered Bay of Blood being a really old master, at least my Arrow copy definitely is. Does Shout have a newer master or will this box be using any type of restoration for that one?

The lack of the Tim Lucas commentaries is especially annoying!
