On The Silver Globe is a tapestry of contradictions: a science fiction film, an audacious philosophical allegory, and an aesthetic opera crafted by one of cinema's rare, true visionaries.
Andrzej Zulawski fuses stunning technical achievements with his own electrifying, relentless style, charging the film with a frenetic energy that forces the audience to confront its complex metaphors. His signature motifs—haunting "double" characters and hallucinatory performances—transform the film into a visual odyssey unlike any other.
Banned, nearly obliterated, On The Silver Globe is the product of a harrowing, tumultuous production. In 1977, political authorities halted filming, and with brutal efficiency, the sets and costumes were destroyed. Yet in 1987, as Gorbachev's winds of change swept through Eastern Europe, Polish authorities relented, granting Zulawski the rare privilege to complete his work.
But instead of attempting to reconstruct the lost footage, Zulawski chose to embrace its absence, weaving together the raw, fragmented images of a contemporary Poland into a shattered epic. The result is a self-portrait of a filmmaker caught in the chaos of history, with the missing pieces of his film telling their own tragic story.
Even in its unfinished form, On The Silver Globe remains an indelible, haunting experience—an unparalleled vision that cannot be forgotten.

i'd never thought this release would happen, but I guess it did (as a UHD-only release no less), even if it was two years after releases in France and the UK Better late than never, I guess.

Re: Mondo Vision
Seems to be geo-restricted outside of USA on Toufaan. I get error 404 when I use my home IP, but it works when I use VPN with US-based server.
Edit: cannot order to Estonia. At check out I get an error message "Your order cannot be shipped to the selected address. Review your address to ensure it's correct and try again, or select a different address.". Even though at the page header they do advertise "Shipping Worldwide!" and I did order Possession LE from them 6 years ago.

Re: Mondo Vision
I've just successfully ordered it with a UK shipping address.
(The price is eye-watering - I went for the bells'n'whistles edition - but Daniel Bird's a good friend and occasional colleague so I like to think that a big chunk of that is supporting his work.)

Re: Mondo Vision
Yeah, strange, it started working shortly after my previous post. I did write to Toufaan's support but I highly doubt it did anything early on a Sunday morning.

Re: Mondo Vision
They've doubled their standard LE print run from 2,000 to 4,000 copies as well, despite all of their other LEs never selling out, including even Possession, a vastly more well known film on a more popular format.
Making the standard edition Blu-ray only, and the LE dual format, and keeping it to 2,000 or less, would seem more sensible.

Pricy. 4000 LEs means I can wait awhile to pick one up. Not my favorite Zulawski film but I love the other MV releases, especially the commentaries.

Re: Mondo Vision
Just speculating, but I imagine manufacturing a triple-layer 100 GB 4K UHD disc is significantly more expensive than producing a standard Blu-ray—especially for a small run of only 2,000 units. Increasing that to 4,000 units would likely make the cost per unit more economical. If rumors are true that their upcoming releases will return to standard Blu-ray, the run may go back to 2,000 units—but who knows!EddieLarkin wrote: Mon Apr 28, 2025 12:20 pm They've doubled their standard LE print run from 2,000 to 4,000 copies as well, despite all of their other LEs never selling out, including even Possession, a vastly more well known film on a more popular format.

Another factor could be On the Silver Globe’s broader appeal in the U.S. market. As a science fiction film with religious undertones—and a production that was halted and banned for a decade—it carries a unique intrigue that Possession may lack. I personally know a few people who dislike Possession but love Silver Globe.
In my view, MV entered the DVD/Blu-ray market at an unfortunate time. They began releasing DVDs just as Blu-ray was gaining momentum, and by the time they transitioned to Blu-ray with titles like Possession, other labels had already started capitalizing on the Zulawski revival with 4K editions. Compounding this, none of MV's titles were handled by a major distributor—not even sold directly by Amazon—which likely contributed to limited sales and the nine-year gap before their next release.

Re: Mondo Vision
Random request: is anyone aware of a method by which I can find the CD soundtrack that accompanied Mondo Vision's release of On The Silver Globe by...ahem...means that do not involve purchasing the set? Please PM me if you are. I'm specifically looking for the electronic/rock tracks rather than the orchestral music that has appeared on streaming services. I'm also looking for something of better quality than the rip of the credits music that is on YouTube that was just taken from the credits of the movie
I would love to buy the set - I love the movie and it looks like a great release. I just can't justify spending that much on a movie that I can't even play (as I am not set up for 4K and will probably not be for a while)
