Re: Awards Season 2024
I will recommend the one of 2 films that I have seen from Never Cursed’s list, Hellzapoppin, which is an absolute blast to watch, filled with wonderful bits of slapstick, fourth wall breaking gags, jabs at both the movies and the moviemaking of 1940s Hollywood, splendid character actors, and pure wit culminating in what I can only be described as Preston Sturges making a Guy Maddin film.
Crazy House on the other hand certainly has a lot of inspired bits of comedy (as with the first film, the bits at the studio are the best part alongside the bonkers movie within a movie near the end) but ultimately fell flat with me, in part because there were too many damn musical numbers, though I guess around music number 5 that sort of becomes the whole point by creating a film so predictable that it turns around in a way into something anarchic in it’s vision.

Kudos to the Academy for waiving the song performances. That was always the worst part of the show, and automatically makes this one better. The last thing I wanted was to hear anything from Emilia Perez performed live. And thanks to Conan for being a good host.

(Adra nearly couldn't attend due to the difficulties of getting a visa.)Inside the Oscar-Nominated Film That No Studio Will Touch: “No Other Land,” about the destruction of a village in the occupied West Bank, is one of the year’s most acclaimed films. Still, U.S. studios are unwilling to distribute it.

Re: No Other Land, I was curious what the reaction on social media was like, so I did a quick search. I should've expected this, but one thing people are pointing out (or joking about) is that not everyone was applauding and of course people were then identifying who those seated individuals were and etc etc

Re: Awards Season 2024
I missed Conan's monologue last night, but saw it today online - meh. I smirked at the Netflix price increase joke, and the Amazon package thief. But I can only take so much of Conan's self deprecating humor. We get it, you're nice and don't want to be mean to anyone. The song wasn't clever or funny. I was thinking a Leno appearance, with him trying to take over the show - with Letterman coming to the rescue. Was Uma Thurman there? Dave could have given us Oprah - Uma one more time. So as performer Conan wasn't anything special, and gave us no moments to go viral.
I liked the Brutalist, and cinematography and score couldn't have to anybody else. As much as I wanted Brady to win, Sean Baker's theater speech needed to be said on a big platform like that. However, I now wish it was Pearce that won instead of Brody, certainly his speech would have been better - and I would like to see Kevin Spacey a little more miserable. Brody came off as really full of himself, despite being an awful writer. That acceptance speech went nowhere.
I guess for some When Harry Met Sally is a classic, but isn't it more true that it's a fucking lame Woody Allen rip off? On the plus side I'm now motivated to see Anora.

Re: Awards Season 2024
Looking at it again, I feel like most people did applaud, if not stand (though many were standing), and I guess there was one limp applause but who knows why, they might not have seen the film. The only egregious one I saw was Diane Warren who kept her head down and did not applause. (Quick search suggests she wasn’t going to be a receptive viewer for the film.)ryannichols7 wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 7:31 amI'm incredibly pleased Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini, my two winners, were standinghearthesilence wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 7:20 am Re: No Other Land, I was curious what the reaction on social media was like, so I did a quick search. Also given some of the idiotic discourse around this, it should further be noted that Sean Baker stood up and applauded for the No Other Land winnershearthesilence wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 5:39 pmLooking at it again, I feel like most people did applaud, if not stand (though many were standing), and I guess there was one limp applause but who knows why, they might not have seen the film. Curious to see if the French press is pissed over Alain Delon’s absence from the In Memoriam
Also, fuck them for excluding Jules Feiffer

Amused by Diane Warren's pissed-off reaction for not winning an Oscar for her song for what seemed to be a dreadful Tyler Perry film.

Re: Awards Season 2024
I really wish David Lynch got his own segment, and I would've given Alain Delon one too rather than leaving him out altogether. (Gene Hackman deserved one too but it would've been way too late to put one together.)Adam Schlesinger of Fountains Of Wayne wrote:I was up against Andrew Lloyd Webber and Diane Warren. You know, all my peers, basically...It was funny, because Diane Warren was sitting right in front of me, and she writes these really sappy love ballads, but her personality does not fit her music. When [Andrew Lloyd Webber won for “You Must Love Me”], she was like, "That piece of shit won?”
I didn't expect either to happen given the direction the Oscars have taken over the past 10 years, but there is precedent for both. Remember, Kubrick was honored in grand fashion following his death (with Spielberg introducing the clip reel for Kubrick) and John Hughes got an enormous one with actors he made famous. To be brutally honest, I'm not a fan of Hughes's work - even the best of them were never that good to me - but like Kubrick you felt like the Academy was trying to honor a director who obviously carved their place in mainstream American film history with limited recognition from the Academy. (In Kubrick's case, quite a few nominations but only one visual effects award. I don't recall Hughes ever getting nominated for anything.) Lynch may have gotten an honorary Oscar in 2019, but by that point, they didn't bother to include those in the main broadcast, which is a huge mistake IMHO. (It's pretty awesome that someone as uncompromising and influential as Michelangelo Antonioni made a rare appearance to receive an Honorary Oscar in 1995, memorably presented by Jack Nicholson, and pretty fucking sad that we'll probably never get moments like that again.)
Delon wouldn't be the first international star honored in such fashion, but those days are long gone. Even a massively popular American film star like Paul Newman wasn't given anything more than a brief appearance in the memorial reel in 2009.

Somebody has to speak up for them. God knows our politicians could care less about offering them protections that decriminalization alone would provide

The Hughes tribute was a dry run for the ridiculous thing they’ll have in store when Spielberg leaves us

I read that the movie has yet to land a US distribution deal but also that the movie is showing at selected US theaters? Isn't that distribution? Do they mean someone to release it on physical media or something like that?hearthesilence wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 6:47 am(Adra nearly couldn't attend due to the difficulties of getting a visa.)Inside the Oscar-Nominated Film That No Studio Will Touch: “No Other Land,” about the destruction of a village in the occupied West Bank, is one of the year’s most acclaimed films. It's being self distributed, which is a different practice than proper acquisition and distribution.

Assuming it finds a large audience, absolutely. But even David Lynch lost a fortune when he self-distributed Inland Empire, and Peter Bogdanovich never recovered after handling They All Laughed.felipe wrote: Sun Mar 09, 2025 9:54 pmAnd is that better because they get to keep a bigger share of box office receipts without having to share with a distributor?Grand Wazoo wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 1:38 pm It's being self distributed, which is a different practice than proper acquisition and distribution.
Michael Winterbottom’s film Shoshana, which is about the origins of Palestinians being exiled from their own land, will get a commercial release in the States more than 2 years after it debuted at festivals

They also want to get this seen by as many people as possible. On the home viewing front, that's much easier if, say, a major streamer picks it up and promotes it to their subscribers rather than leaving it to fend for itself in the wilderness of YouTube or Vimeo. It could do well on its own that way now that it has an Oscar, but I'm guessing there's enough viewing data at this point to suggest it wouldn't.felipe wrote: Sun Mar 09, 2025 9:54 pmAnd is that better because they get to keep a bigger share of box office receipts without having to share with a distributor?Grand Wazoo wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 1:38 pm It's being self distributed, which is a different practice than proper acquisition and distribution.

"No Other Land Won an Oscar. Many People Hope You Don’t See It." NY Times op-ed by Palestinian American activist Rania Batrice and Israeli American activist Libby Lenkinski on the reaction to the film and Oscar speech following the film's Oscar win, specifically from the Israeli government and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (e.g. The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel).
