Bob Dylan of all people DID win for a brilliant song (“Things Have Changed” from Wonder Boys)

I can’t take a category seriously that didn’t recognize Jim Steinman for “Tonight is What it Means to be Young” or Dan Hartman’s “I Can Dream About You.”

I actually forgot and remembered that seconds after I posted.

I looked through all the winners from years past, and it's hard to judge a lot of those earlier songs because many, maybe even all of them, have been interpreted wonderfully by somebody down the line, whether it's another pop vocalist or quite often a jazz musician, but by mid-century, there's a lot of treacle and tastes seem especially conservative as you get into the rock-era. Occasional and welcome exceptions though, for Isaac Hayes, Eminem, Common and John Legend...

Diane Warren should have an Oscar, but she should have it for "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" from Armageddon, a legitimately great power ballad. I dare you to hum from memory the song that won against it: "When You Believe" from The Prince of Egypt.

I really liked the In Memoriam this year especially Freeman’s tribute to Hackman but did anyone else notice the guy turning on his phone in the audience near the end of it or was it just me?

Crawley winning cinematography for The Brutalist seems well-deserved to me. Didn't see Maria but feel like it's unlikely The Brutalist wouldn't have won my vote.

I know he lensed Ballast and 45 Years and Corbet’s other films, but it now feels as though Lol Crawley has officially arrived as a big deal cinematographer. His work on The Brutalist is Elswit, Deakins, Lachman level great

I barely watched the Oscars in recent years because they seemed increasingly ashamed of celebrating film art or history, but it feels like they've really corrected that awful trajectory, and maybe that's a credit to Conan. tbf I missed a lot of the first hour, coming in late and then stepping away for a meal, but so far so good. (I'm still divided about the long intros where they shower praise on the nominees - it can seem a bit much, but for an industry notorious for being hard on those below the line, it's probably greatly appreciated.)

Baby steps, though. One big step, for example, would be to give each of the Best Pic nominees maybe, say, a full measly minute of airtime to at least give some impression of what they're about, instead of a short burst of incoherent clips.

I remain baffled that the Oscars are so reluctant to show anything from the actual nominated films. It's like they assume that everyone watching has already seen all of them.

A lot of news outlets picked up the kiss so at this point it would be overkill to repeat it for television.

Also someone just pointed out that Alain Delon wasn't in the memorial segment.

Re: scenes, I originally thought that was a golden rule for the Oscars, but at some point they just tossed it in the trash. I can't remember when that happened, but it's unfortunate because it's really the only way to actually celebrate a film for what it does - show at least some portion of it as is, not chopped up or whatever.
