ryannichols7 wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:36 pm I do think some of these "release" and "upgrade" should be the other way around. like I see both Seven Samurai as "upgrades" as they were already on BD and are mostly a format upgrade (BFI adding a new commentary + booklet, though). I personally see Arrow's Silence of the Lambs as a whole new release as they did tons from the ground up. so I'll vote accordingly
We seem to touch on this every year.

Some of it will be subjective too, as we all have our own (peculiar) preferences.

The Shootist and The Tin Star are somewhat similar releases (from Arrow US), but I happened to like the on-disc extras on the former release a lot, while those on the latter seemed to me... fine, just not "my thing" to the same degree.

Hence I rated The Tin Star mostly on the basis of the film itself, the presentation of it, and how much I had "missed it". Which is to say, I rated it more as an upgrade than as a full release.

I realise that from an "objective" POV, the extras on The Tin Star are just as exhaustive as those on The Shootist, an equal amount of care seems to have been taken, and I'm totally fine with swo putting both in the Overall Release bracket (if that was intentional).

Same with Nostalghia, I leave it up to swo, happily.

I've been judgmentally assigning some things to release vs. upgrade that got nominations in the other category. If anyone takes issue with where I've placed anything, bring it up and I can reassess

How come you moved Daisy Miller and Has Anybody Seen My Gal in one direction and Nostalghia in the other (while Body and Soul has remained in 'upgrade')? They all seem to have gotten the "extended KL treatment" with a new commentary and one or two archival programmes.

Again, I'm not questioning the choices, just curious about criteria.

The first two are new Kino releases. They released Nostalghia before. I was thinking they'd already released Body and Soul and had just updated the transfer, but now that I think about it, that was Olive

I see, I hadn't thought of label-switch as a criterion.

I'm working on my post for the year at the moment (though I'm going to stick to the old fashioned way of doing things if that's OK), but I thought I'd mention the wonderful cover for Hundreds of Beavers as worth a nom:
