Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
I already have six of those titles in HD (exceptions are Almanac of Fall and The Man from London), so three in UHD would be a pretty decent incentive.

I also think it's interesting that after they've worked hard to make Curzon a "brand" lately, this is potentially being labeled "An Artificial Eye Collection"? seems wacky

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World

Pre-order is up on Amazon. The Prefab People is included.

the UHD stand-alone is Werckmeister Harmonies (meh!), not Sátántangó.

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
They’re doing the same strategy again after the Lars von Trier set with Breaking the Waves separately in 4K. However that film didn’t have another UHD in the world and some of the LvT restorations were new to Blu-ray in the English-subtitle market.
I doubt that the Tarr box sells well since it’s BD-only and Curzon’s tendency to reuse whatever old BD masters and encodes they have around, in this case Sátántangó. That film and Damnation received FiM-encoded BDs in the US. I understand those that don’t need UHDs after such superb BDs but if you’re doing something like this much later after most fans already got the US BD, a label like Curzon simply needs to step up and deliver something extra for Tarr’s arguably biggest works in this set and not just count on people getting this for the new-to-BD titles.

I’d like to get this, since I never got the BDs of Satantango or Damnation, but the price comes to $130 from Amazon for me. That’s too steep.

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
I own The Turin Horse, Damnation and Satantango and was really pleased by the Criterion Werckmeister Harmonies so I legitimately don't see what this adds aside from again, the new to Bluray titles. if this is all mostly existing stuff then it's difficult to justify that price tag

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
So the originally announced UHD of Satantango will not be included? Wonder what happened there? Is the UHD of Werkmeister only in the standalone? (I guess that would not make my Criterion redundant, but still a strange choice). Extras? Macbeth?

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
Werckmeister is only separately available in 4K whereas the set is all BD. I think we’ve interpreted Curzon‘s disc overview that the 4K-restored films would actually come on UHDs but that was before seeing the actual description that was only released today. Extras are not yet clear other than a booklet and posters for the set.denti alligator wrote: Wed Jul 31, 2024 6:03 pm So the originally announced UHD of Satantango will not be included? Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
So that's just like the von Trier set, which had Breaking the Waves only on BD even though they separately released it on UHD

Which begs the question: why couldn't we have gotten a separate Katalin Varga UHD?

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
While it's nice to finally have it on Blu-ray, I'm really struggling to envisage what a UHD of an ultra-low-budget 16mm film could possibly bring to the table apart from a thumping monetary loss for anyone who attempted such a thing.therewillbeblus wrote: Wed Jul 31, 2024 7:13 pm Which begs the question: why couldn't we have gotten a separate Katalin Varga UHD?
Anyway, while I stumped up for the Strickland box, I doubt I'll spring for the Tarr box - I already have most of his filmography in HD courtesy of Arbelos/Carlotta, including all the titles I'm actually interested in. On the other hand, the UHD of Werckmeister Harmonies is tempting.

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
I was joking, partly for that very reason, but perhaps more obviously that its inclusion is what is likely selling the box to people who already had or could purchase the other main-feature releases already

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
I guess it's still a worthwhile purchase for me, though I'm hoping the price drops first. Good place to buy AE/Curzon from the US?

Orbit or Atomic Movie store or Diabolik though you're probably not going to see much of a price drop with any of those. I don't remember if deepdiscount stock UK labels.

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
They actually do store many imports from the UK and Australia and they’ll get them typically a few weeks after the items’ release dates.
I’m not ordering imports there as they’re way too expensive but I’ll see what they’re getting each time I shop there for my US items.
For example, these are the imports they’re getting for UHDs in the near future: https://www.deepdiscount.com/search?mod ... sp=Imports

Good point, I just meant that there isn't the same overlap as those other sites and it's rare to see some of the bigger non-U.S. releases on there. But they've been relatively consistently about stocking Australian releases in particular

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
One potential selling point for this set is that the earlier films emerge as remasters as well. I was told that Tarr’s shot-on-film features only existed in crappy analog sources until the recent 4k remasters, so there’s a good chance Curzon’s blu-ray could look refreshing. I for one would jump at the chance to see Almanac of Fall in a quality remaster.

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
The Outsider and Family Nest have new 2K restorations. The DCP’s screened at Lincoln Center last year and looked great. (Note that Janus has the theatrical rights.)

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
I wonder what the chances are of Curzon doing a big Theo Angelopoulos box. I suppose that most depends on the restorations made available.

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
If it's of any interest, someone at Curzon tweeted about the Strickland set, to which I replied "Haneke next?" and they liked my tweet. No idea if it'll actually come to fruition but hey, I've thrown my hat in the ring.
Perhaps the only one of these sets I'd consider shelling out for (was ready to grab the Wenders one til I heard the encodes are terrible).

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
Although if the post by Brad Stevens was correct it appears that a lot of those films have had edits made to them. So they may need an extensive refurbishment, or search for materials.denti alligator wrote: Thu Aug 01, 2024 1:50 pmThis would be a dream come true. What A Disgrace wrote: Thu Aug 01, 2024 12:35 pm I wonder what the chances are of Curzon doing a big Theo Angelopoulos box. The Curzon sets ofte turn up with specific offers in Amazon sales, such as Prime Day etc.denti alligator wrote: Wed Jul 31, 2024 2:16 pm I’d like to get this, since I never got the BDs of Satantango or Damnation, but the price comes to $130 from Amazon for me. That’s too steep.

Re: Artificial Eye / Curzon Film World
Professorwho at BR.com asked Curzon about their encoding and they’ve confirmed that they switched to a proper company (Visual Data) to do their UHDs with Memories of Murder. The upcoming Werckmeister Harmonies and Paris, Texas will also be encoded by them. Quality is likely on par with what FiM accomplish, so these releases are safe purchases. Paris, Texas in particular due to the new extras Curzon commissioned.
