Vinegar Syndrome et al.
To be honest, that was more wishful thinking than anything else, and I don’t really know. I have a DVD of Who Am I This Time?, but that was part of American Playhouse, and there were releases of many of those stand-alone movies.beamish14 wrote:I’d love his documentaries on Haiti and Cousin Bobby. Is PVS willing to license stuff like “A Family Tree”?jazzo wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2024 4:57 am Especially considering, if they decided to go with any Demme picture, Citizen’s Band hasn’t had a physical release since VHS days, and Melvin and Howard could certainly use a more robust edition than Twilight Time’s BR from a few years ago.
Add in Who Am I This Time? and A Family Tree to either and you’d have an incredible set.
It’s my understanding that A Family Tree was the pilot episode of an anthology series, Trying Times, so licensing the single episode may not be possible. But I’d take that whole series, too! Maybe there are some lost gems!

I actually didn't know that was their mission statement, but that's hilarious in light of announcements like this and Goin' South. Like yeah, sure, these are part of the HBO block scheduling in the 80s canon (which actually seems to be the main frame of reference for most people on the Blu-ray.com forums)swo17 wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2024 5:34 am Look more closely at the mission statement:

Not to quote myself, but thinking about this a bit further, how great would it have been if this label decided to release LIGHT OF DAY as their fancy-shmancy Schrader instead of TOUCH? I know music rights might make it difficult, but given what they accomplished with LITTLE DARLINGS, they can clearly solve those of issues if they put their minds to it.jazzo wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2024 4:57 am Especially considering, if they decided to go with any Demme picture, Citizen’s Band hasn’t had a physical release since VHS days, and Melvin and Howard could certainly use a more robust edition than Twilight Time’s BR from a few years ago.

Have they ever licensed something from Sony? I wonder what’s up with the Sony-affiliated boutique label that Quentin Tarantino was tasked with runningjazzo wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2024 4:47 pmNot to quote myself, but thinking about this a bit further, how great would it have been if this label decided to release LIGHT OF DAY as their fancy-shmancy Schrader instead of TOUCH? I thought the first title of his label was supposed to be The Lady in the Car with Glasses and a Gun, which is with Columbia I think?beamish14 wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2024 4:51 pm I wonder what’s up with the Sony-affiliated boutique label that Quentin Tarantino was tasked with running

I thought Tarantino said the label was cancelled because Columbia refused to let him release the films as unrestored prints taken from theatrical prints. If that's true, Columbia made the right decision.

It would certainly be could to have that option. Imprint did this with a German print of The Osterman Weekend

Today's announcement from VS Labs is Ryszard Bugajski's Interrogation. I gotta say, that's not one that I expected from them. I've got the Second Run disk. Where the SR has a 2005 interview with director Bugajski, the VS has a making of that includes interviews with multiple other people including Bugajski's widow but not him.

...and is tempting to me for that specific reason.
(Although I didn't pay for the SR edition - regular contributor's perk - so I can justify forking out for this one. Ditto Arbelos's Twilight.)

New Instagram post from Kani showing their next 4 spines, the first one of which is almost certainly My Heart Is That Eternal Rose. They're probably my favorite of OCN's partner labels at the moment!

Hint for VSA title coming next month:
For the partner labels, I hope that Film Movement stops releasing titles that they've already released before and finally release the Lee Chang Dong films that they have the rights to.
I'm gonna guess that they are going to release Angel Terminators 1 and 2, since I can't think of any other 90s HK duologies off the top of my head. I selfishly hope it's not though, since I found both of them to be your completely generic run-of-the-mill HK actioners with no real personality and completely average action sequences. Letterboxd is telling me that I logged the second film 3 years ago on this very day and I genuinely can't remember anything about it.VSA is back August 1! We're bringing you another double feature of '90s Hong Kong action that expertly mixes star power and fire power—both titles are making their English-friendly Blu-ray debuts, exclusively at vinegarsyndrome.com

Yukari Oshima wears skin tight leather pants with "SLUT" printed all over them. That's the only thing I remember.yoloswegmaster wrote:Letterboxd is telling me that I logged the second film 3 years ago on this very day and I genuinely can't remember anything about it.

Film Movement's pages for the Lee Chang Dong films give a date of August 30th for watching at home, FWIW. I loved Burning and liked Poetry a lot. Would anyone who's seen the other three films recommend a blind buy? I've heard of Peppermint Candy the most.

It’s been a very long time (and I saw it before Burning, so I can’t be sure my opinion would hold) but Peppermint Candy was my favorite by a mile when I went through his work. It’s an outstanding, powerful film

Oasis is really amazing being perhaps the smartest use of extremity I’ve seen.

Secret Sunshine is one of my favorite movies (and for the love of god, don't watch the trailer). Green Fish and Oasis didn't quite stick with me, but I suspect my opinions will change after revisiting them whenever Film Movement releases them. I liked Peppermint Candy more, though I also need to revisit it.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome et al.
Peppermint Candy and Secret Sunshine would definitely be my suggestions for the next two as well. FWIW, new 4K restorations of both were recently made available, so hopefully they'll see a physical release here in the U.S. (I imagine Criterion will still have the rights for the latter.) The 4K restoration of Secret Sunshine was used for a regular Blu-ray that was issued in Taiwan but no UHD's yet AFAIK.

Oasis can be an uncomfortable watch but I love it. If you come from Secret Sunshine primarily valuing the performances Lee gets from his female leads, then do check it out. Moon So-ri's is an all-timer.
