Yeah, that Hiventy signature can be awfully saturated.

The Ritrovata list keeps on growing, sadly... Army of Shadows 4K. :(

Comparison with the blu-rays because I was curious.

For what it's worth, the older DVDs were much more teal than the blu-rays and more in line with the 4K restoration, but I have no clue on how it's meant to actually be

The 4K restoration unfortunately appears to have been affected by elevated blacks. We'll have to see how it turns out on the actual disc in (presumably) HDR/DV.
I wish they'd done the grading more carefully similar to Farewell My Concubine which is nicely balanced throughout. That may be the difference between Hiventy and Ritrovata.

The "black and white in color" idea Melville had looks most convincing on the Criterion BD.

I wish Eclair would have released both the Denis Chocolat and the Hallstrom Chocolat. Then there would have been two chocolat eclairs and that would have been tasty indeed.

Classe tous risques (1960): The 4K restoration was done by TF1 with the label Coin de Mire Cinéma that did the UHD and graded by Éclair. It’s a great grade that doesn’t suffer from inadequate grading (low contrast, raised blacks,…)

That Man from Rio (1964): New 4K restoration that was done by TF1 and Hiventy in 2022 and the color grade bears no resemblance to the usual signature tints of the lab.

I think you wanted to post those in the UHD worth/not worth thread. ;)

I actually wanted to post them in here. I thought this thread was one to contribute to your wonderful master list of European restorations graded by the infamous labs you shared on your website.

If inappropriate in this thread, I can delete them. No problem

The thread main focus is the infamous Ritrovata and Eclair Cinematic Universes, and aims at tracking the affected movies.

This might indeed be the place to discuss other labs possible structural ways of working, like, say, Hiventy, but while I thought you posted about The Man from Rio for this purpose, I was surprised to also see Classe tous risques which is B&W !

So I dont mind titles with similar issues being provided here, but I think it'd be better to restrict it to these, not European restorations as a whole.

Thanks for letting me know, I’ve just adapted my posts as I can’t delete them any more. After seeing those two beautiful restorations from infamous labs, I hope we’re getting more in that vein. Still, way too much damage was done already.

No problem, and thanks for your detailed feedbacks in any case ! I'm just trying to have a centralised thread not dispersing too much (and hopefully isn't being a pain at trying to avoid this dispersion).

Carlotta's Nagisa Oshima Coffret Collector has In the Realm of the Senses and Empire of Passion in 4K and both were restored by Éclair in 2016 and 2017.
Both are Éclair'd with their color signature tint as well as elevated black levels as a result.

I'm getting tired of this crap (though I guess at least A Woman Called Abe Sada wasn't done by them).

Looks like the same 4K that's been circulating for a while, right down to the same disappointing color grading.

Yes, Ran is the Eclair 4k restoration.
I'm quite OK, as far as I recall, with 4 nuits d'un rêveur. It's visibly Eclair, but not that much (but it is).

That's a really nice set of extras on the French blu-ray. I'm hoping some of them are included on whatever region one edition surfaces.
