Re: Cinema Guild
I like the exclusive extras compared to the Third Window, but I was really hoping for some contribution from Adrian Martin, who is a fan of the film (he includes it in his section of 'high school comedies' in his canon list on his website). maybe that was too big a swing for a smaller label like Cinema Guild, who I'm happy to support always

Oh man, I’m sure his insights would enrich the film so much more, and Somai’s work in general. He’s a perfectly-suited type of complex filmmaker for Martin to engage with

I'll be happy if there's picture quality improvement over the Third Window. That version wasn't unwatchable, but it was a huge disappointment for me.

Re: Cinema Guild
To be fair, everything I've got from Third Window other than Typhoon Club was good––and there is a good Tom Mes commentary on the Third Window disc. The compression on the Typhoon Club disc was bad, and there seems to be some sort of softening going one as well.
The Japanese discs of Luminous Woman and Love Hotel are both really good––Luminous Woman especially. So I'm hopeful Third Window will be able to deliver.

Re: Cinema Guild
When is Typhoon Club due out?
(I wonder if the source itself is fundamentally problematic and can't be improved much?)

If you click the announcement link on the previous page (and you don't need Twitter/X to see), it says June 4th

Re: Cinema Guild
The restoration looked really good in a theater. Some guy came on the Somai thread a while ago to say that the compression on the disc was the main problem with the Third Window version, but it does look like there's grain reduction that is contributing as well. Neither issue is with the restoration itself. If they can't do better than what Third Window did, they might as well not put out a UHD version, because the problems on the Third Window blu ray are mostly about losing picture detail.Michael Kerpan wrote: Thu Apr 11, 2024 2:19 pm I wonder if the source itself is fundamentally problematic and can't be improved much?

Got my copy, with its extra booklet, yesterday. No chance to look at the discs yet, however.

Re: Cinema Guild
Looking at the trailer -- this is the film that was almost entirely shot more or less out of focus, right?

Re: Cinema Guild
someone in the comments on their Instagram mentioned they own the rights to In Another Country, which would be amazing news. Kino wanted nothing to do with that movie, bizarrely. they have quite a few older Hongs in their holdings still at Cinema Guild that I hope we see sooner rather than later

Re: Cinema Guild
TWBB -- Well, I have liked everything up to this point (unlike you, I believe). So I have no problem with Hong's newer work -- and want to see all of it. Still, unless this is all shot from a dog's perspective (like parts of a certain, mostly wonderful 3-D film), I am not sure I understand this particular stylistic decision.

I haven't seen it because theatres near me rarely play Hong, so I'll hold judgment. Walk Up was just okay, most recent I've gotten to see

I don't know that I "loved" Walk Up, but I certainly enjoyed watching it (twice).

I'm a Hong-head / I've been Hong-pilled, so I'm happy to get anything new and old, but most especially want a blu of The Day He Arrives.
