Well, StudioCanal will be privy to all relevant figures - and they'll also be far better informed than many labels about UK-based UHD sales in general - so they presumably have their reasons.

Maybe a 4K link will pop up at a later date, or they could, like Kind Hearts and Coronets, regret and issue a 4k copy much later.

Criterion could have taken the 4K rights for US and UK. It'd be their first SC UK UHD but I wouldn't rule anything out with them. They’ve given us surprises this year already with their deals with Milestone (I am Cuba) and Film Movement (Farewell My Concubine) which I assume the fewest of us have expected to happen.

Should the SC UHD turn out to be another Le cercle rouge, I hope Criterion come to the rescue. I don’t know how well Army of Shadows sold for Criterion during the BD era, seemingly enough to warrant picking up the license again and doing a nearly identical reprint of their first (OOP) BD.

I can understand why Canal wouldn't issue it in the UK if sales of Le cercle rouge were poor, but I don't understand why they wouldn't put English subtitles on their French release. Surely, it wouldn't add any cost at all, considering they'll already have the subtitle file (maybe even in the same package as I doubt they're replicating two different Blu-Rays).

Hopefully the specs are just wrong.

It'd make sense to exclude the English subs if indeed another label like Criterion seized the (4k) rights in both UK and US territories. Then in this situation the UK blu-ray to be issued by Studio Canal would be a curious case. As it will feature the newest 4K restoration, whereas the hypothetical Criterion UHD will for sure just pack its old blu-ray in the combo.

Has this kind of arrangement ever happened before?

The Third Man 4K UHD coming in September. Another shot at the audio perhaps?

McCrutchy has confirmed on the other forum that the French UHD for Army of Shadows does indeed have English subtitles.

In Dec. 2024, SC will release a box of 10 Hitchcock films, silent and sound, from 1927-32; The Manxman has a Stephen Horne score. See the June 1 post here:

So, the 9 films they licensed to Kino + Juno and the Paycock? Sweet!

Hopefully they are aware of and will fix the ridiculous error on Rich and Strange. I understand it appeared on another release, not just the Kino, so is presumably part of the master.

That and the aspect ratio of the talkie version of Blackmail if they plan to include it, although that one is completely on Kino and can be easy for SC to avoid.

Hitchcock's silents were restored under the London 2012 banner. It is a shame BFI were never not able put out a boxset of those. Happy to pick up this set, at least, nonetheless.

Figures that Blackmail is probably only going to be available as part of a boxset after such a long wait but maybe SC will break it up after a year. If they do and the silent version looks even better than the Kino, I'm in.

Just received the BD checkdisc (no UHD for me in the mail) for The Conversation. Quick glance at it : it looked gorgeous.

I suspect it will be the 9 films plus Elstree Calling, considering that's the one other Hitchcock (even if only partially) that they have in their holdings.

They have both but I guess it could be Elstree as well.

Wonderful news. I think we can safely assume that FiM got to do the encode. Bonus features on the UHD and the use of PCM sound were already early indicators. I’ve just checked Amazon UK and the Limited Edition is already sold out. Luckily the UHD is also available in Germany.

Does it say that SC did a good job with Le Cercle Rouge? Do they mean the restoration or the SC UHD?

The BFI never had any intention of releasing these; they knew going in that they didn't have (and couldn't clear) the rights, and that it would be up to ITV and StudioCanal to actually do something with the restorations. From their perspective it was an important cultural preservation project, not a commercial one.

tenia says that Le Cercle Rouge was "a relative home run" in 2020, which sounds like a pretty positive opinion. But further on, tenia mentions unspecified problems about restorations of Cercle Rouge. tenia doesn´t mention specifics about the restoration or the SC UHD.

Here is a review of the SC UHD:

Thanks! I don't speak French, so Google translate is kinda rough. I thought the Criterion 4K is the preferred version, so was surprised to hear what I thought was positive feedback for the SC version from someone like tenia.
