Don’t think there’s a dedicated filmmaker thread, so sharing an interview with two of Miklos Jancso’s children Steve Macfarlane posted on his Substack about the new restorations of his films, the new restorarions of Marta Meszaros’ films, and the Hungarian industry at large in the current moment.

Not sure if this is the best thread for this, but the Cinémathèque française has Michael Curtiz's 1914 silent A tolonc (The Exile or The Undesirable) streaming for free until May 3, with English or French subtitles available for the Hungarian intertitles.

This is the perfect thread for this, and it's well worth seeing.

In fact, I wrote a capsule review a few years ago:

Narratively, this is a fairly standard-issue wrong-side-of-the-tracks romantic melodrama, and its mise-en-scène is strongly tableau-driven in common with much pre-Griffith silent cinema, but Kertész clearly has an eye for a striking image, a great sense of pace, and the exterior locations are particularly well chosen, not least for the way they capture images of rural Hungary immediately prior to WWI (especially valuable given the scarcity of such moving-image footage elsewhere). The film’s already highly visible nationality is enhanced by Attila Pacsay’s score, with its Bartókian folk tunes and cimbalom interludes.

(The online screening appears to have the same score, which is excellent news.)

No English subtitles for the Nepp animation but the other titles have and was able to view them after registration. Will watch the Janisch film after reading a very interesting IMDb user comment plus Mari Törőcsik stars.

Just a few days left! Thanks to Nemzeti Filmintézet - Filmarchívum / National Film Institute - Film Archive, Orpheus and Eurydice (1985) is available to view online until 1 January 2023.

Working alongside cinematographer Sándor Sára in 1985, István Gaál created a breathtaking reimagination of Gluck’s iconic opera about this ancient and heartbreaking legend.

Does anyone know where I can buy Clavis DVDs, specifically their Márta Meszáros series, other then direct from them? I have had terrible customer experience trying to buy direct with them and am looking for an alternative outlets.
