To be fair, no one can get the Criterion Blu-ray of Viridiana, since it doesn’t exist.

yeah I'm totally fine with Viridiana coming from Radiance, especially given there will probably be actual supplements created for such an edition! who knows when Criterion will get to their own edition, especially given that they're rumored to have Los Oliviados and El (but not some of the other titles)

the Mexican titles are a possibility though, I just don't know the rights situation. it just lines up with the Sight and Sound that Viridiana is likely

Wait really! Oh sorry, I must had misremembered something because I definitely thought it had a Criterion Blu-Ray, in that case, the Radiance release will be very welcome.

Radiance Films General Discussion & Wishlist

We took a poll on this forum maybe 20 years ago and a box set of Buñuel’s Mexican films was the most-wanted Criterion release. This was before we got the three they did release, but we still hunger for more!

TechnicolorAcid: The Exterminating Angel was upgraded by Criterion to Blu-ray, but I think the consensus here was that it was not a great improvement on the DVD.

FWIW, here's the page for the "Buñuel in Mexico" program which will run during the first three weeks of February at MoMA.

Schedule isn't up yet, but it does say:

"Organized with the invaluable assistance of Daniela Michel and Chloe Roddick of the Morelia International Film Festival, this program consists of 19 of the 21 films Buñuel made in Mexico (two French-language productions, La fièvre monte à El Pao and Cela s’appelle l’aurore, were unavailable), mostly in newly restored 35mm prints from the Mexican archives, La Cineteca Nacional, and La Cineteca de la UNAM."

BAMPFA held a Bunuel retrospective a couple months ago that contained quite a few of the Mexican titles and most of the titles were licensed from the Luis Buñuel Film Institute. While Él is with Janus (not a shock due to the World Cinema Project connection), Los Olvidados is listed as being with Kino Lorber. I asked the insider last year if they were going to release it but they said that they weren't sure if they were going to release it.

I'd go for VIRIDIANA as I've never seen it. but would be more excited for the Mexican genre films or social realist films that are so much more than that.

They weren’t sure if they were going to release Los Olvidados, one of the most important films not yet on an English-subbed blu-ray, yet they are sure about dumping loads of trash nobody cares about month after month, and rerelease the same old stuff with a higher bitrate every now and then?

No offense, but if you did this for every worthy film that they didn’t release (for reasons you can only guess at), you’re engaging in a huge exercise in futility. Ok, so they bombard us with a lot of junk along the good stuff, but meanwhile Criterion is slow as molasses in updating so many important films that USED to be their bread and butter, that is another kind of frustration. But….taking a step back, it’s still a great time for physical media in a time that it’s supposedly going down the crapper.

Kino put out theatrical prints of Los Olvidados back in the 90s/early 00s and are more than likely listed as the most recent theatrical distributor, especially if they’re screening a 35mm print, however, The World Cinema Project has both Los Olvidados and Él so presumably those will come from Janus/Criterion in the coming year(s). The US blu rays of Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz and The Brute from VCI leave a wide room for improvement and I would love to see Radiance tackle those, if not some of the more unavailable titles like Mexican Bus Ride, Illusion Travels by Streetcar, or Wuthering Heights.

No offense taken. I was just aiming at the "not sure" part. A clear yes or no with reasons would be easier to take. "Not sure" feels like they either don't care or don't even know the importance of and demand for the film out there.
By the way, I was a bit upset exactly because Los Olvidados is not merely a "worthy" film for Kino, or for any other label. It's Los Olvidados. If we're taking the ranking in a canon list like those from S&S as some kind of objective reference, there aren't too many films above its stature that still await a blu-ray debut in the English-speaking world.

As DRW suggests it’s undoubtedly due to the WCF and Criterion being interested. Kino had the rights to Stalker for ages but never released a Blu. Why not? Stalker is a major film right? Well because Criterion will have been chasing it hard and it was either worth it financially to Kino to play ball or they got outbid on the renewal.

Kino put out classics on a monthly basis in pretty much barebones editions, there’s no reason for them to sit on this, they aren’t Criterion.

Is that 20+ year old Cine-club DVD the only disc release of Los Olvidados? I have that…is it watchable? Haven’t put it on for a spin in ages, but now I want to see the film again! Agreed it’s well past time for a modern release!

I bought the bundles (2+2+1+1) and was hoping to get discord access. unfortunately I bought the first order through a different email and so I didn't receive any email about getting access. I wrote in, giving my order numbers and stating all four transactions were me...and then woke up this morning to find one bundle refunded. however, even if I rebuy, am I going to be denied access based on the fact that I didn't buy all my bundles on the same day? hopefully there's an answer here

I have the French Films Sans Frontières edition, which may well date back to the last century.

Wonder if PY0 is Panic in Year Zero (1962) even though it wouldn't typically be a period associated with them.

Could JCB be Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975)? I can find no films with the initials JCB.

Finally PDC could well be Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970).

Well TK3 & 4 are presumably two more films from Tai Kato, but what I’m truly hoping is that EP1 & 2 are two more films from Elio Petri. We Still Kill the Old Way would be especially wonderful.

I hoped so, but given they are doing TK3 and TK4, and Petri already has one release, it would be inconsistent. That said, maybe they are only referring to 2023 releases. If Petri, I would guess two of Il maestro di Vigevano (1963), and A ciascuno il suo (1967), which both already have Blu-ray releases on the continent, or Todo modo (1976), which is probably the biggest title unreleased on Blu-ray.

I would love BOO to be Banditi a Orgosolo, which almost works, with the + being the short films of Vittorio De Seta, which would mirror the French Carlotta release.

I wonder if MOCK is a Mocky set. I don’t think any of his films are commercially available with English subs, and while his output is wildly uneven, I think he’d be a big hit with a lot of viewers who have no idea they’d enjoy his provocations

If anyone can work out the possible Bunuel, please share. I couldn't find an obvious acronym in any language, but might have missed the wood for the trees.

There's a surprising lack of obvious directors for an SM boxset. There's surely not enough Sergio Martino titles left of interest in the UK, unless someone wants to make a case for some of his comedies. Another outside shout would be Samira Makhmalbaf.

I can't see anyone possible for DG.
