Re: Re:Voir
It's worth noting that if you're only looking for blu-ray, you'll miss out on a lot of great releases from them. Re:Voir is the only label from which I still regularly purchase DVDs, since they continue to produce discs that will likely not be upgraded with great stuff on them and in very good quality. Sometimes it's hard to tell if a disc is DVD or blu-ray from them. Having said that, zedz' point that Siegfried A. Fruhauf's Nature and Abstractions benefited from HD in his initial writeup is spot-on, and it's one of my very favorite discs I own. If you don't have it yet, that's an easy blind buyWhat A Disgrace wrote: Sat Mar 25, 2023 6:35 pm It sure is difficult to navigate their site and find out what, exactly, is on Blu-ray! Is there a regularly updated master list of their Blu-ray releases? I'm pleased at the discs I've bought - all save the Jonas Mekas set were blind purchases - but it sure is a hassle to figure out what to look for.

Any particularly worthwhile releases that've dropped in the last year (since the last big group buy)?

Their blog doesn't seem to have been updated since the Vanderbeek release in March, so I'm just going by their website slideshow. 2023 releases seem to be:therewillbeblus wrote: Tue Dec 12, 2023 4:25 pmAny particularly worthwhile releases that've dropped in the last year (since the last big group buy)?
Klonaris / Thomadaki - Double Labyrinth
Stan Vanderbeek - Visibles (3 disc box set)
Su Friedrich - Cinexperimentaux 12 (documentary + some shorts)
Helga Fanderl - Constellations
Robert Kramer - Work Vol. 8: Doc's Kingdom / Scenes from the Class Struggle in Portugal
Bill Morrison - Footprints

Re: Re:Voir
I'm definitely interested in the Vanderbeek set.
The Friedrich release includes two shorts that weren't on any of those Outcast Films DVDs.
The Morrison apparently can't be sold to North America until next year (and to the UK at all?) It has these films that weren't included in the BFI set (mostly because they were made since then):
Footprints
The Dockworker's Dream
The Letter (on SR's Dawson City)
Wild Girl
Let Me Come In
Her Violet Kiss
I wonder if any of these might appear on Second Run's just announced Morrison release

Re: Re:Voir
I sampled a couple more of these. Klonaris/Thomadaki can be had at a further discount if paired with an earlier release. This duo focuses on the female form, whether in a confrontational feminist way, through surrealist tableau, or in psychedelic freakout mode. I was reminded at times of the musician Klein. There were moments here and there I quite liked (with Pulsar being my favorite) but some of this may not be for everyone.
Fanderl looks perhaps more accessible, with random footage of various things from nature. Hard to say without seeing more where 2 hours of this would all fall on the scale of pleasant enough to great. I think I'm leaning toward picking all of these releases up though, in addition to the ones I mentioned above.
I guess I would probably also place an order from Re:voir first thing next week (along with the order I want to place from Lux) so anyone interested in a group buy, let me know. (There's the same deal here where shipping is pricy but is a better cost per item the larger the order is.)
I should also mention that despite what I said above, it looks like Re:voir's site will let me order the Morrison set

Re: Re:Voir
One 2023 release zedz failed to notice is Robert Cahen: Entrevoir, which is quite good! He's a French video artist working with degraded source material that makes for some trippy catnip. Something like Juste le temps reminds me a little of Jacques Perconte's distorted landscapes, but then other times there are creepy clowns or John Zorn screaming in your ear. It looks like you can actually stream all of these films on the director's website. Here's a good starting point: L'Entr'aperçu

Re: Re:Voir
Perhaps a silly question, but are their releases region A or region-free? I searched this thread, their site, and Googled but couldn't seem to find an answer.

Re: Re:Voir
First watch from the 2023 bunch was Klonaris / Thomadaki's Double Labyrinthe.
It starts out and gets its name from one of those incredibly annoying ball bearing games (get all the balls into the centre of the maze, but do two at the same time), but the meat of the film is fairly trad serial Actionist antics. I don't have a lot of time for "Look at me! I'm covered in flour!" cinema - though it's definitely preferable to "Look at Me! I'm covered in excrement!" cinema - and these actions are positively genteel compared to Kurt Kren or Otto Muhl. The female body is inevitably more semiotically charged, however, so swings and roundabouts. I wouldn't recommend this disc for non-aficionados of Actionism.

This is streaming at Le Cinema Club this weekhearthesilence wrote: Wed May 25, 2022 2:27 amI just saw this at MoMA via a DCP from Re:Voir. It looks GREAT! It was originally shot on 16mm, correct? I imagine they must've scanned the OCN (at 4K perhaps?) because it was a pretty fine grain, nothing heavy or clumpy - it was comparable to an excellent exhibition print of something shot in 35mm. It also looked like a raw scan with NO touch up whatsoever - like you had all the little bits of damage and scratches flying up all the time, but it was hardly distracting - the picture quality itself was top notch despite the visible damage. It's too bad it's not available on Blu-ray, but at least it can be rented on Vimeo and streamed in HD.furbicide wrote: Tue Feb 19, 2019 11:20 pm Marcel Hanoun's seminal Une simple histoire is out on DVD on the 5th of March, according to Re:voir's social media. Looks beautiful, particularly in comparison with the murky online copy that most people would be familiar with.

Re:Voir is running a 50% off flash sale through October 20. Basically all Re:Voir titles except for box sets and multi packs (like the Garrel and Hanoun ones) are eligible, no discount on distributed titles. This link will take you to the sale list (discounts are applied in your cart).

Re: Re:Voir
In case you didn’t notice; Re-Voir released Garrel’s Regular Lovers on separate DVD and Blu-Ray editions last month and it’s included in the sale (which ends tonight). I haven’t found any reviews for it but will report back when my copy of the Blu arrives.
