Was hoping for something more interesting, especially something that wasn't already released, as the Criterion Von Sternberg trilogy that has Underworld is still in-print.

Fucking hilarious! They’ve done this before, licensing the Underneath even though it’s still in print from Criterion

I mean, cool to get a new transfer but this is easily the weakest of the three in the Criterion box. all the silents they could've done and we get one with an in print release from another US label

not sure what the rights situation is here

New scan, sure. Otherwise a rather odd choice.

Yeah, but Kino’s has a superfluous commentary!

It's from 1927, so technically speaking, the rights situation is irrelevant. The film itself was PD as of January 1st, 2023. Of course Kino is presumably paying for access to the new master—which is funny, as I had never considered a possibly lucrative, probably unwise angle on PD for studios: sell the master to everyone and let them duke it out with tat and extras.

Given the, uh let's say, mixed quality of Paramount's in-house 4K masters, what are the odds that this end up looking worse than Criterion's older master?

I caved and bought this full price last month, so of course it’s now included in their new sale for $10!

Time to do a small order with Stackery, he says. 100 titles in his basket...

Kino have released a lot of good stuff in the past ten or so years.

Love how the noir titles are cheaper in this sale than they were in the Noir Sale

To answer my own question, it seems that Frank Tarzi has said that Kino only renewed around 50 of the 130 StudioCanal titles from their first deal.

While a mixed bag, I found Pinkerton's commentary exclusive to the KL Milky Way worth double-dipping for, and I'll certainly be revisiting it in the future. I gave a more thorough rundown of that disc's extras here

Hopefully discontinuing those Chabrols indicates a box set of his early sweet period, but I'm not holding my breath

I'm really hoping that Touchez pas au Grisbi is one they decided to let go since the disc,as reported in this thread, looks pretty lousy and Kino's subs aren't that great. (Which means that Kino will hold onto it.)

Apparently Ulmer shot the whole thing in one single week. I haven't seen it but reviews like this one have me intrigued.
