I don't think any of the titles in them have had standard, widely available releases. A few have had Best Buy LEs (e.g. Lawrence of Arabia) or Criterion (Last Picture Show) releases, and there were placeholder-page-inspired rumors of some EU standalones, but I don't think they ever actually materialized.

It would no doubt be fiscally beneficial for Columbia to put out some of these individually or license them to certain boutique labels, but their system seems to be trying to hook people into buying expensive sets based off an interest in one or two titles (there isn't exactly a running theme within the sets that indicates 'If you like this movie, you'll surely enjoy the others!'). So unless they change their business model or sales are sluggish, I'm not optimistic they'll prioritize solo releases

Dr. Strangelove does. Also Gandhi, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Jerry Maguire, but only in select countries for those 3.

Ah! Thanks for the correction. I remember hoping for some of the EU standalone releases for vol 3 and guess I just assumed they were all vapordisc when none of those materialized. Still, erratic choices and expensive imports, Strangelove aside... Given that each Classics box has progressively dropped to lower and lower all-time-lows (just checked on Amazon: $90, $85, and $72 respectively), here's hoping this one'll get down in the $60s eventually.

Meanwhile, the Taxi Driver UHD is constantly north of $100 on eBay. They can't see the demand for an individual release? I want specific titles, not poorly curated, scattershot collections "for the whole family."

Sony is releasing a BD of The Luzhin Defence (2000) on 2/20/24, and both Cocktail Hour (1933) and Shadow Magic (2000) on 3/19/24. A rather eclectic series of choices lately, which also included Pollock (2000) on 12/12/23.

Anyone know if Columbia does disc-replacement? My copy of vol. 4 arrived with several scratched discs, and the idea of returning the whole thing seems daunting

An incredible film. My thoughts:
therewillbeblus wrote: Fri Jun 11, 2021 9:11 pm Shotgun Stories, which is an excellent portrayal of alcoholism and classism's effects on family dynamics and inherited resentment like a disease, a stripped-down kitchen-sink Hatfield–McCoy feud based on the most logical motive for bitterness one can conceive of in real life: social-emotional disenfranchisement.

I would have preferred ALL of the shorts in one set (the movies I can take or leave), but still it's exciting to have the knuckleheads in HD at last.

Post moved from UHD thread; should have posted in Columbia Classics in the first place which would have avoided duplicates from other members. Sorry.

Never understand why Criterion wasn’t able acquire this as art of their original Sony deal.

It’s had so many Blu releases (I still only have the first one from TCM) that they may have just figured the market had been tapped already

From MifuneFan at Blu-ray.com, it appears this is the lineup for Columbia Classics Volume 5 4K UHD (1949-2019)
All the King's Men (1949)
On the Waterfront (1954)
A Man For All Seasons (1966)
Tootsie (1982)
The Age of Innocence (1993)
Little Women (2019)

They don't bother throwing in a surprise item like Anatomy of a Murder or His Girl Friday this time. Easy pass.

All the King's Men is an inspired choice, but not enough to pick it up

For me personally, this Vol. 5 set has the best lineup of films since the first one. Haven’t seen All the King’s Men but the others are exceptional titles. I’ve always thought Criterion are sitting on the three they released previously. Sony really made something out of their celebratory year but a part of me wishes they’d given their Sony Pictures Classics library another go though. Seeing the 2022 set being readily available almost two years later after multiple significant price drops is very unfortunate and probably what makes this a one-off thing.

Yeah, that Vol. 5 lineup, if accurate, is rather fantastic.

I've combo-ed more Criterion BDs and Sony UHDs than with any other studio. This would not reverse that trend.
