MichaelB wrote: Wed Nov 06, 2019 4:58 pm Looking at that comparison in more detail, it's clear that Criterion does what I also do for Indicator releases - taking a broadly solid but possibly overly literal translation and slightly tweaking it line by line to make it read better.
This is pretty much what Rialto does per their demonstration last week, though they're more thorough with the tweaking - I think they actually cut down a lot of stuff just to make it reasonable. (They gave a demonstration with Panique to show why they don't subtitle everything, and there were moments where the screen was overwhelmed with subtitles due to the amount of dialogue between characters.) I didn't think to ask if they usually turn over their subtitles to Criterion, but Lenny Borger is often Rialto's subtitler.

Probably old news, but Touchez Pas Au Grisbi on Blu-ray looks surprisingly bad (same master on Kino and SC releases) - surprising because it's de-grained in a way that isn't seen on the old French Blu-ray for Casque d'Or that pre-dates it, and I was hoping for something along the same lines. FWIW, there is a new UHD of Casque d'Or I haven't seen yet, but it could be even better.

And that's far from the only problem with it. Really a worthless disc.

Has anyone been able to compare the Kino and BFI releases of Kamikaze Hearts? The extras are identical, save for a booklet with the BFI’s

Per the BFI description:
Presented in a new 2K restoration from the original 16mm A/B camera negatives, Kamikaze Hearts has been restored by Kino Lorber in collaboration with the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project at the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
Looks like their using the same transfer so the BFI release is the best for their extra booklet. Thank you for reading.

Someone asked Guy Maddin if Careful was getting a Kino/Zeitgeist Blu-ray release and he said “there are some stirrings.”

Would definitely love an upgrade of that whole DVD package.

Really excited for this. Love Imogen Sara Smith's work.
July 11th...
FORCE OF EVIL (1948)
• 2022 4K Restoration by Paramount Pictures, UCLA and The Film Foundation
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Imogen Sara Smith
• Introduction by Martin Scorsese (3:33)
• Theatrical Trailer
• Reversible Art
• Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase
• Optional English Subtitles
I'll probable prefer the reversible art, which is probably from an original poster over this...

Holding onto my Arrow blu til we see how this looks, but cautiously optimistic and glad it's finally coming! Unless it's suddenly canceled like Bug, of course..

The Paramount title from Kino announced today is The Perfect Weapon (1991). At least it's not Chuck Norris.

I’ve seen all of these and they’re not very good— Kino Lorber isn’t even releasing the only entry that rises to the level of okay, Curtiz’ the Kennel Murder Case

Thanks for that tip — I vaguely remember enjoying Kennel and was curious if the others were worth it for a Powell fan.

One of my favorite 50s noir. Hopefully being out of print will only lead to it being snatched up in a new restoration.

High Noon is going to be released on 4K UHD. This is the second Paramount title that Kino has released on 4K that was previously released by Olive Films. Maybe we will see other Olive titles like Johnny Guitar, The Quiet Man, and Rio Grande receive 4K releases from Kino.
