Re: Vinegar Syndrome et al.
The extras for Showgirls seem to be a bit disappointing as it doesn't include the You Don't Nomi documentary. I also can't tell if the interviews are new or from the previous releases.

Yeah, if all or any of them were actually new, I'm sure VS would have labelled them as such.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome et al.
The previous release (here in the states anyway) only had the stripper tutorials and the camp commentary track so the other stuff is all new here as far as I know. Unless it was on some foreign release.
I was hoping against hope that Berkeley would be willing to do an interview but I guess she’s not interested.

If anything the doc seems more akin to say ETR Media, especially because of their Clue Doc release, and also it already has a Blu-Ray so I don't think Syndrome would actively try to get rights for something already released on Blu-Ray in the States. Thank you for reading.yoloswegmaster wrote: Mon May 01, 2023 6:48 pm The extras for Showgirls seem to be a bit disappointing as it doesn't include the You Don't Nomi documentary. It's definitely an acquired taste, but I think it's the exact kind of full-throated social satire that you would appreciate - and I think that probably gives others an idea of if it might appeal to them.swo17 wrote: Tue May 02, 2023 3:52 am The VSP announcement Sick of Myself appears to have a few fans on the board. Last week I went down a bit of a rabbit hole wondering why in the world Julianne Nicholson isn't being cast in absolutely everything these days, and was doubly pleased to see that she's going to be in another movie, helmed by Sick of Myself's Kristoffer Borgli. He must have attracted some important eyes to secure the cast for his upcoming American debut, which sounds awesome

Re: Vinegar Syndrome et al.
Has there been any info on the restorations of The Hourglass Sanatorium and The Saragossa Manuscript that Yellow Veil will be encoding from? The listings on VS don’t mention anything. However, I did find that The Hourglass Sanatorium has had a 4K resto from OCN shown theatrically. But there’s no recent reference to The Saragossa Manuscript from a quick Google search.
I’m also kinda bummed on missing A New Old Play’s slip (speaking as someone who usually doesn’t care either way). I sat on this batch of announcements for a day without checking the titles, thinking they’d all be the usual meh horror/exploitation flicks. Hopefully orbit/grindhouse/diabolik will have some reserved.

Hmmm...I just compared The Hourglass Sanatorium to the Polish Blu-ray from the Scorsese set. To my eyes, they're from about the same source but the old Polish Blu-ray has visibly better compressionAxeYou wrote: Wed May 03, 2023 4:56 am Has there been any info on the restorations of The Hourglass Sanatorium and The Saragossa Manuscript that Yellow Veil will be encoding from? They’re definitely the same source, as confirmed by the restoration credits at the end.

Thanks, swo17 and MichaelB! That's a shame. As far as I can tell, the 4K restoration was billed as "new" back in 2020, and the old Polish set was released in 2015. Guess I'll hold off and wait for another label to acquire the new restoration.MichaelB wrote: Wed May 03, 2023 6:32 am They’re definitely the same source, as confirmed by the restoration credits at the end.
The extras look intriguing though. I recognize Annette Insdorf from her excellent interviews and commentaries on Arrow's Kieślowski boxset (Cinema of Conflict). Decisions, decisions...

If I remember right the Mr Bongo is identical to the Polish Blu-Ray so I’ll hold onto that then (although it means missing out on a couple of extras). Shame we didn’t get the 2020 transfer, missed opportunity.swo17 wrote: Wed May 03, 2023 5:30 am Hmmm...I just compared The Hourglass Sanatorium to the Polish Blu-ray from the Scorsese set. Re: Vinegar Syndrome et al.
I can't remember if there was any divergence in menu design, but the video files on the Mr Bongo disc were literally the same ones as on the Polish disc. Either that or two separate encodes implausibly produced files of exactly the same size, but I suspect that's considerably less likely.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome et al.
I reached out to Kani and they seemed genuinely surprised by the demand. They also said they had no idea if retailers would get any copies and it depended on whether they put in their own pre-orders through the wholesaler. They couldn't tell me whether that was the case or not, which makes sense (why sign on with a distributor if you want to deal with all that stuff yourself?). But the speed at which it sold out through VS's website makes me hopeful Orbit et al. put in a fair number of preorders themselves—I notice that Diabolik still has the LE of Speaking Parts, which went similarly quickly from the VS store.AxeYou wrote: Wed May 03, 2023 4:56 am I’m also kinda bummed on missing A New Old Play’s slip (speaking as someone who usually doesn’t care either way). Tested on my PS5; Speaking Parts is a region-free disc, not A as mentioned on some sites.

I hope you've learned a valuable lesson from this experience! Vinny's partner labels, as of early last year, have induced me to spend about $100 a month on some really lovely films in genuinely pretty packages and I can count on one hand the number of titles I regret buying (sorry, Deaf Crocodile - looks like it's just Solomon King).AxeYou wrote: Wed May 03, 2023 4:56 am I’m also kinda bummed on missing A New Old Play’s slip (speaking as someone who usually doesn’t care either way). Haha yeah!! I've also picked up a few interesting partner label releases like Morvern Callar and I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians, and eyeing several of Deaf Crocodile's East European titles. It's just the "signal-to-noise" ratio is so low that I didn't pay as much attention. It's also surprising that this title's slip sold out so quickly. I don't recall seeing too much buzz when it was released theatrically. IIRC only one single showing at my local indie/rep theater. Perhaps a pretty slipcover is the ultimate bestsellerWhat A Disgrace wrote: Wed May 03, 2023 5:03 pm I hope you've learned a valuable lesson from this experience! Re: Vinegar Syndrome et al.
You can usually find these slips in various places online. Some of us sell them on eBay, FB, etc. I'm not sure if the Buy/Sell/Trade section of the forum welcomes requests for slips, but if so, that might be a good place to mention your requests and those who have one to offload could connect with you
Personally I don't typically spring for them, but if I happen to get a release with a slip, I usually sell it off to pay for part of the disc. Lots of people do that, so there's a pretty reciprocal ratio of sellers/buyers for these products - I wouldn't worry too much about missing out on one if you look in the right places, depending on how rare it is/how much you're willing to pay

Re: Vinegar Syndrome et al.
Whoops, didn't realize that it already had a blu release here...
There are interviews with the cast and crew that appear on the German releases, which makes it more confusing as the German and VS releases each have exclusive interviews. Also, if they are new interviews, why not just say so in the first place? This isn't the first time that VS have done something like this and I've noticed other labels live Radiance are doing the same thing.CSM126 wrote: Mon May 01, 2023 7:34 pm The previous release (here in the states anyway) only had the stripper tutorials and the camp commentary track so the other stuff is all new here as far as I know. Re: Vinegar Syndrome et al.
After looking into their new partner label, I realized The Film Deck holds ‘The Devil, Probably’ meaning that there’s a good chance there will be a Bresson film released under the Vinegar Syndrome site. I don’t know if I should be terrified or be laughing hysterically, than again they do seem to release more arthouse titles so maybe it won’t be that shocking. Thank you for reading.
