Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I see on another forum that it's been observed that they only included non-new release titles that they list for 21.99. So older things that list for 19.99 there (that's a lot) are excluded. Whether this was purposeful or just weird filtering is up for grabs.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
Granted my watch list is comprised of the ones I don't have (and most of those I don't want or am still unsure about), but just about all of them were included in the sale, only a few were missing. There's probably enough left to scrape an order together though.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
Didn't notice this until now because I didn't remember the title, but A Lion in the Streets is one of the films I've been looking out for. (I knew about the Warner Archive DVD but I was hoping for a local repertory screening, never believing a Blu-ray would be out first.) Richard Brody has been talking it up for quite some time.bottlesofsmoke wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 12:57 pmA Lion in the Streets is an interesting, in some ways superior version of the Huey Long story that inspired All The King’s Men...

Something that threw me about this sale was that some titles not in the sale list are indeed eligible for the sale price. I looked for The Last of Sheila and The Clock in the list of releases that are part of the sale and they weren't there, but when I used the site's search feature and put them in the cart, the discount code brought them down to the 4 for $49 price.

Not sure about that new logo - it takes up a lot of real estate.

Probably going to be 'Land Of The Pharoahs' and 'Helen Of Troy', as Deadline already revealed that it received new HD masters.FrauBlucher wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 5:34 pmAlso, during the March 27th The Extras podcast they will announce some May titles

Films that start with "The" are alphabetized in the "T" section in the sale list. Both title you mentioned are there, but you have to look for them with the "T" titles rather than "L" or "C". I originally got thrown for the same loop looking for The Last of Sheila.Gregory wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 4:44 pmSomething that threw me about this sale was that some titles not in the sale list are indeed eligible for the sale price. Ah, ok, I saw "Bermuda Depths, The" and "Boy Friend, The" listed that way in the B's and figured that if The Clock were in the sale, it would be in the C's, and I didn't look all the way to the last page of the list, as I ultimately decided not to order. I'm more tempted to just order these releases singly elsewhere whenever the prices drop to $12-13 or lower.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
For once Warner Archive promised a great lineup and are really delivering!
Border Incident is really good, the best of Mann’s pseudo-documentary films, I reckon. Alton’s cinematography should look great in HD, especially with this film, which really pushes the limits darkness on the screen, even in “wide open” western spaces. Hopefully this means that Mann’s other WB-held titles (Devil’s Doorway, Side Street, The Tall Target, all of which are great) get released soonish, same with The Blue Gardenia, with Clash by Night and Rancho Notorious recently getting put out. it’s one of Lang’s best.

That's funny. I just watched yesterday the blu ray for The Naked Spur and went through the Mann titles and thought "Why isn't Border Incident out on blu ray yet?"

Is On Dangerous Ground the only other film from Warner's third noir set to be upgraded to Blu-ray before now?

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
The restored version is showing (premiering?) on TCM right now. It looks incredible: very crisp and stable image, rich gradation of tone and contrast, fine grain, clear sound. You would never guess it’s a 1932 film, it could visually pass for one made 20 or more years later.soundchaser wrote:One-Way Passage is probably the best Kay Francis performance I've seen outside of Trouble in Paradise. She and William Powell really carry what is otherwise a fairly standard weepie. I've got the DVD but may pick up the Blu-Ray in a future sale.

Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I think the version streaming via the on-demand Watch TCM app is either heavily compressed for streaming or is the older transfer. It doesn’t look nearly as luminous, shows some superficial damage I hadn’t noticed before, and has much harsher contrast. Now I wish I had stayed up late to finish the live airing that was on last night.
The eventual WAC Blu-ray should look great, though.

About Clash by Night from HTF...
Robert Harris wrote:If folks were to read original views from 1952, they might never find this superb noir, directed by Fritz Lang for RKO.
And that wouldn't be a good thing, as they'd be missing something special.
Transplanted from Staten Island to Monterey, California, this black and white delicacy, shot by Nicholas Musuraca (Out of the Past, The Spiral Staircase) is one of the most beautifully rendered films I've seen take from OCN to Blu-ray.
Had I been told that I was viewing 4k HDR, I wouldn't have doubted it for a moment. Film grain is perfectly rendered, and blacks glisten.
Interesting in that in the original play (Clifford Odets), the role of Mae Doyle was played by Tallulah Bankhead - about 180 degrees from Miss Stanwyck. Her supporting cast is likewise superb - Paul Douglas, Robert Ryan and Marilyn Monroe in an early credited performance, only 2 months after All About Eve, and well in advance of that film's release.
Clash by Night has always reminded me (in an odd way) of post-war Italian realism, as the day to day environment is so important to the overall texture of the film. And by that I mean you can smell the seafood.
While I normally don't review product this far in advance, I wanted HTF readers to be aware that the forthcoming release (it's about a month away) is probably going to sell out quickly once word hits the street that it looks like a new 35mm OCN print right out of the lab, and just off cores.
My advice on this one is to get in a a pre-order, or wait for the second printing.
