I'd have given Best Supporting Actress to Stephanie Hsu instead of Curtis. What is really going to annoy me is if Michelle Yeoh doesn't win Best Actress.

All Quiet on the Western Front was handsomely shot, I'll give it that much.

The performance for "This Is A Life" feels made by people with pure contempt for this film, my God

I say this every year, but I'm constantly baffled by the Academy's refusal to give Best Pic nominees more attention than these short 30-second packages of random clips. Especially in this day and age when most people aren't familiar with most of the nominees - try to get them interested! Use the time to advertise the films! Maybe show extended excerpts from actual scenes! Instead they act like they're embarrassed and are trying to hide them. It's inexplicable.

ETA: Actually I think I was overly generous by saying they're 30 seconds.

Don't fret, they'll give an entire 5 minutes to Top Gun: Maverick

What makes it worse is they used the ceremony to sneak-peak a full-length trailer for Little Mermaid which was probably longer than all the BP nom clips combined

ABC/The Academy did this with another Disney film last year, but I’m blanking on what it was

This reel is almost identical to the intro film you actually watch on the Warner Bros. studio tour

Bold of them to put Singin’ in the Rain in this montage.

Very true - Disney gonna Disney.

But speaking of which, that was the first preview I've seen for The Little Mermaid, and I'm shocked by how awful it looks. And I don't mean in an "unenjoyable" way (although that too), but the actual look of the film. Disney's had a lot of trouble mixing live action with the animated legacies of these films, and I guess it's inevitable that a movie set underwater would be especially awkward in that regard ... but still. It's literally no better than you'd expect from a parody that SNL threw together in 3 days.

I know. It’s a shame that contemporary, non-fantasy works almost never get recognized in that category (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was one of the big exceptions), as it’s very difficult to create a design aesthetic that matches what the DP and production designers are trying to achieve
