Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Very interesting - Studiocanal will rerelease The Trial in theaters and on home media, but only in the UK, France, and Germany. US rerelease will be handled by Rialto.

Geez, looks like many on my list will be hitting later in the year.... The Trial, Lost Highway, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, Blast of Silence and Cure. I better start saving

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
After reading through the press release again I am not sure Criterion will be releasing The Trial. Didn't Studio Canal's press release mention Criterion was going to release Mr. Klein? Why wouldn't they do the same for The TrialHogfather wrote: Wed May 11, 2022 9:23 pm Very interesting - Studiocanal will rerelease The Trial in theaters and on home media, but only in the UK, France, and Germany. Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
The Mr. Klein press release said that Criterion would put it out in December 2021, and Criterion didn't even announce it until February 2022 and released it two days ago. Since there is no US home media distributor listed, the release is probably either more than a year down the line, Studiocanal doesn't want to give an incorrect date again, or the rights to the home media release are still basically up in the air. It's very possible that Criterion doesn't have the rights, but if that's the case, then i doubt anyone does.FrauBlucher wrote: Thu May 12, 2022 9:43 pmAfter reading through the press release again I am not sure Criterion will be releasing The Trial. I totally forgot about this. You're probably correct about SC holding off until the US distributor is ready to announce it themselvesHogfather wrote: Fri May 13, 2022 12:13 amThe Mr. Klein press release said that Criterion would put it out in December 2021, and Criterion didn't even announce it until February 2022 and released it two days ago. Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
I personally would not get too excited for August announcements. Feels like we are heading for a rather low-key month after July. Couple of late-00s indies, 70s western, French classic that you might have already bought elsewhere, recent documentary, no rereleases or 4Ks type of month.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
The late 2000s indies could be the Sean Baker films (Take Out, Prince of Broadway), while the 70s Western could be Monte Hellman's 'China 9, Liberty 37'.

My money on the Western is Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid which Alex Cox suggested was coming

Can you share the titles, and if not can you PM them? Curious about the French and 70's Western.eerik wrote: Sat May 14, 2022 5:37 pm I personally would not get too excited for August announcements. Probably Buck and the Preacher after its long run on the channel, though I really hope its Pat Garrett and the french film is most likely something like Hotel du nord which feels super overdue and was also released by Arrow already in the uk

I think he was giving a very specific and frankly not unexciting sounding hypothetical of a dull month. Not real hints

they've put out quite a few in the past couple years and none of them are an upgrade of Harlan County USA. Their priorities are nice and f#cked

Wow, so The Ninth Gate and Run Lola Run; a rediscovered new version of Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid; a Blu-ray of La femme infidele; and a complete Adam Curtis boxset.eerik wrote: Sat May 14, 2022 5:37 pmCouple of late-00s indies, 70s western, French classic that you might have already bought elsewhere, recent documentary, no rereleases or 4Ks type of month.

An Obama/Netflix-produced Oscar- and Independent Spirit Award-winning Sundance documentary... should be right up Criterion's alley

That and it was one of the initial four or five titles Netflix announced Criterion was releasing.Maltic wrote: Sat May 14, 2022 9:40 pm An Obama/Netflix-produced Oscar- and Independent Spirit Award-winning Sundance documentary... should be right up Criterion's alley

French classic = Contempt, not in UHD? I'll hope for Le Boucher or something I haven't bought elsewhere, but not holding my breath. Also dreaming one of the late 00s indies is Margot at the Wedding...

I doubt it's Contempt since it sounds like the user is saying that there are no upgrades or reissues. I would wager that they are talking about The Crimes of Monsieur Lange, which I would be quite glad to see.

The Crimes of Monsieur Lange had a German bluray release so it fits his description and it's a Renoir, so good guess

The clue seems to hint at something many of us would already have on Blu. That doesn’t strike me as one of the many possibilities

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Hmm, yeah, it does seem like he hinted as it's widely available. Could it be a Truffaut?

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
With all the Truffaut just sitting on the Channel, that's certainly a possibility. I know he said no upgrades, which precludes Shoot the Piano Player and the recently restored Antoine Doinel films. That puts Confidentially Yours, Two English Girls, and The Woman Next Door in the front of the pack, if it really is Truffaut we're talking about here.
