It also sets a pretty bad precedent for the boundary between performer and audience. There are dozens of people who could have done the same thing to Gervais over the years but didn't because you just don't assault someone in public, no matter their words.dx23 wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 3:29 am I’m still shocked about the slap heard round the world but honestly, Rock should have known better than to make fun of someone’s illness. As someone who has been on a situation similar to Will, where someone made a crude remark to my wife and I responded with a punch, I sympathize with him, but at the end of the day, it still looks bad to everyone around and usually makes things worse.

Was thinking about Gervais too and Kanye. Both deserve their slaps but what a mess would this create. Reminds me almost to the fallout of the NBA Malice at the Palace where everyone came out looking horrible even if some punches were justified.captveg wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 3:34 amIt also sets a pretty bad precedent for the boundary between performer and audience. Well, back to the awards, pleasantly surprised with the Coda win for best picture. Didn’t expect that one at all.

Honestly, it’s just as well that this is probably the weakest set of winners in recent memory since this year’s ceremony is only going to be remembered for the Smith/Rock incident. The awards themselves are already an afterthought.

I don’t know in which universe physical assault can be justified over something someone has said.
Never been a fan of Will Smith nor Chris Rock, but if he really wanted to stop speech like this, I’m sure he would have had enough clout with the Academy to make sure Rock doesn’t get invited again or at minimum can’t make “jokes” like this again.
It will be interesting to see what the fallout from this will be.

Yes, it’s assault, don’t make it look like Rock here is the good guy. There’s some line’s people shouldn’t cross, and making fun of an illness is one of them. Like I said, Chris may not have been in the know about this but again Jada has talked publicly of her Alopecia illnessFiery Angel wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 3:41 amIt's called assault, not "slaps"dx23 wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 3:39 amWas thinking about Gervais too and Kanye. Love makes people do stupid things, and is occasionally worth it. Not defending one or another but plain as day that’s how I see this.

It feels like many of you have not been at the receiving end of a slur or a crude remark to a wife, partner or kid. Words have power and lines can be crossed. When people crossed those lines and try to have power over you with a slur or something along those lines, people are justified to respond with physical violence. It’s not a good look and may cause more trouble but as someone who has been called a slur by bullies, I can assure you that sometimes the only way to push back is with a punch or a slap.

Re: Awards Season 2021
Domino, everyone reacts differently to situations. I’m a functioning member of society but like I’ve mentioned, was bullied with slurs and threatening remarks. Either I punched my way out of it or things would keep repeating. Things like this aren’t black and white and I’m not saying that what Will did tonight is completely right or wrong, but condemning him like if he killed somebody is not right either. Words have power and they can be use for violence and intimidation. We can’t dismiss this as sticks and stone breaks my bones but words never hurt me situations.domino harvey wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 4:07 amI do not react with violence to slights or insults, perceived or otherwise, directed at me or my loved ones. Can’t agree more with Domino on this one.
And I’m not saying words can’t hurt or cause damage and I’m not trying to defend Rock in the least bit, but there are more effective ways to deal with people like this, especially if you are in a position like Will Smith is or at least was in.

I hated that the singers were standing in front of the screen showing who had passed away and blocking it a little. I felt like I was sitting in a bad seat in a movie theater with rows of taller people in front of me. Hated them having live singers at all, though I liked the tributes (don't think Betty White warranted one).soundchaser wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 2:43 am The In Memoriam segment is a damn sight better than last year’s, at least. I guarantee you this will be in a montage of “Most Unforgettable Oscar Moments” on the 100th Oscars in 2028 (if not sooner) right in between the Moonlight/La La Land switcheroo and David Niven and the streaker.domino harvey wrote:He should be removed from the Academy and his statue revoked. It’s a very weird and saddening situation all around. I hope ABC does cancel the Oscars telecast and they just get tweeted out like the first hour (and the Globes) did. Can’t go out on a bigger high/low than this.

Smith's only recourse was not hitting someone. It's not like Chris Rock was menacing Pinkett-Smith with his boys in a deserted hallway. Violence should be the last resort not the first. I'm sure Smith has faced many challenges in his life, but he's also one of the most privileged people on Earth, at least in terms of money, fame and sway in the movie business.domino harvey wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 4:07 amI do not react with violence to slights or insults, perceived or otherwise, directed at me or my loved ones. He also seemed to find the joke funny until Jada looked at him unhappily about it. He found the other jokes at other people's expense funny as well. I'd wager he was in a performative laughter moment, almost an automatic learned thing prestige guests who are in the front row at these events learn to do. Then he saw she was upset and turned the dial to 11. Just bizarre in many respects.Noiradelic wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 5:05 amSmith's only recourse was not hitting someone.
