I hate to be that pedantic guy, but Robert DeNiro wasn't even in The Godfather. This isn't the 50-year anniversary of The Godfather Part II.

Diddy of all people setting up the Godfather tribute? Was Pitbull too busy?

OK I take it back. I now agree it was unlikely staged.

I’ve never liked Will Smith’s smugness, but this is just more fuel for the fire

Coppola should've stumped for Megalopolis like Welles did for The Other Side of the Wind when he got his AFI award.

The uncensored footage makes it 99+% likely it's real. Why would they stage a bit where Will Smith yells expletives for that long

Poor Ridley Scott. Dragging G.I. Jane AND The Last Duel into this mess of a ceremony

The In Memoriam segment is a damn sight better than last year’s, at least. These tributes are touching.

Is Will Smith’s career in it?

I like it too. Honestly I like the more upbeat tone - feels like celebrating a lifetime of great work.

See, if it had been staged, Chris Rock would have been included there, a la Ass Dan.

Smith will come out of this OK. Apparently Jada has a condition that causes hair loss, so Rock will go down as the heel for making fun of her, and Will can play the whole "Sure I overreacted but anyone would be mad seeing their sick wife get ridiculed in front of the whole world" card.

And he wouldn't be exactly wrong to say that.

It was odd seeing just "actor" by Norman Lloyd's name, but I guess his producing/directing credits really were exclusively in television

Will Smith also laughed at the joke initially, while Jada was noticeably upset, and then after some off-camera delay he came up and socked him. I mean, he probably took a second to realize it was a joke at the expense of his wife’s hair loss, but still. If it was staged he wouldn’t have faked laughing and a delayed reaction

If anything, there should be more of this sort of score settling where both parties come out on equal ground. It's fun for everyone!

Why was The Power of the Dog nominated for set design? Ahuge part of the movie was set outdoors and the mountains were already there, all they did was build a fairly typical house set.

Would have loved to get a reaction shot from Van Morrison as he lost.

I forgot that the last time Chris Rock hosted, he pissed off quite a few people (Jude Law and Sean Penn for starters).

His Jude Law joke was absolutely uncalled for. I would not have supported Sienna Miller rushing the stage to assault Rock though, unlike apparently some of you

To be clear, I don't support it. Just saying how I think it'll play out.

Was that the ‘If you want Russell Crowe, don’t just settle for Jude Law?’ followed by Penn saying ‘I think Jude Law is one of our finest working actors’ later on? Im sure there was some far more provocative stuff that night, but I didn’t agree with the joke

I wasn't watching that part, but I thought Van Morrison wasn't at the Oscars due to touring commitments. Did he perform?

No, Van is not in the house. A real shame for multiple reasons.

Chris Rock also said this joke back when hosting the Oscars: “Jada Pinkett Smith boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties: I wasn’t invited” so there’s history

I love his work, and normally I'd love to see him perform AND win, but given his COVID nuttiness of the past year, I'm not sure it would've worked out.

Also, the nominated song is actually an old one (you can find old bootlegs of it uploaded on YouTube) - feels kind of weird when an artist wins for polishing off an outtake they had lying around then writing for the film itself, but I think that's how Stevie Wonder won his. Love Stevie too but man of all the songs to win....
