Re: Awards Season 2021
Hey, it's not like Denis won't have another shot with Dune Part Two (or Three). Kind of like how they didn't give Peter Jackson any awards until Return of the King.
And since Dune has no shot at Screenplay, they should have given its nom to Ricardos just so Sorkin wasnt snubbed.

Re: Awards Season 2021
As someone who liked Dune, I think its presence in these nominations isn't really that telling. It's there because it's the highest-grossing English-language film that can be reasonably touted as a prestige product (sorry to the admittedly-very-good No Time To Die and to the surely-atrocious Marvel and F&F releases) and because it was one of the first such films to see theatrical success following the availability of vaccines. I highly doubt the sequel or whatever follow-ups succeed it will be given an awards push outside of technical categories unless for Zendaya or Keoghan specifically.

Re: Awards Season 2021
I'm actually really pleased Sorkin got shut out. I think the guy is all wisecracks and little else. The Social Network admittedly was a good screenplay and some West Wing episodes have strong writing but it also shows when Sorkin feels being above the material he's adapting, and I thought when he has this much contempt for I Love Lucy maybe he was the wrong writer/director for that project to begin with (even if he had enough of a strong interest in Lucy herself to write about her).
Quite a strong selection this year actually though as usual, nearly half of the Best Picture nominees have no business being there (Don't Look Up, King Richard, Nightmare Alley, Belfast). On the other hand, Drive My Car is in there whilst also being up for Best International.

Re: Awards Season 2021
yeah that's typical ever since they opened that category up. Pretty pointless since a movie wont be taken seriously as a Best Pic nom unless it also has a Best Director nom and people will assume those would have been the five if the category hadn't been expanded.Finch wrote: Wed Feb 09, 2022 1:25 am Quite a strong selection this year actually though as usual, nearly half of the Best Picture nominees have no business being there (Don't Look Up, King Richard, Nightmare Alley, Belfast). Did we miss the honorary Oscars this year? They’re all great: Samuel L Jackson, Elaine May, and Liv Ullmann plus Danny Glover getting the Jean Hersholt award

Realized that this is somehow Dunst’s first nomination. That’s crazy.

Oscar ceremony will NOT require proof of vaccination, leading some to believe that at least one of the major likely winners (or one of last year’s winners coming to present) and not just Van Morrison is secretly anti-vax

I wonder if some stars might decline to attend in protest

Also, potentially related, today I learned that Daniel Kaluuya is managed by a spiritual guru named Heir Holiness, wtf?

I guess we’ll know if he skips SAG, which is keeping their vaccine mandate. One of the trades apparently said it’s one presenting winner from last year (which can only be McDormand or Kaluuya because Hopkins and the grandma from Minari filmed themselves getting vaccinated) PLUS a big name nominated this year

Re: Awards Season 2021
While Will Smith suspiciously avoided the Telluride film festival, he’s since made plenty of appearances and Q&As in venues in states that required him to be vaccinated. Basically anyone on the circuit this season for a category as visible as Acting or Director will have needed to be vaccinated to make the appearances at many of the fall festivals and other places this year.
THR’s original scoop was that one of last year’s acting winners would not be able to attend, and both Hopkins and McDormand are publicly vaccinated. So that leaves two people, one of which did a sketch about vaccine skeptics when they hosted SNL in Early April.
My essential understanding is I don’t actually think it’s about making sure any one person can go as sort of an olive branch, can’t-we-all-get-along, they’ll just be mad and not watch even more if we don’t let people come who didn’t get the shot endeavour. Which as with most decisions made for the sake of the show fundamentally misunderstands why people do and don’t watch the Oscars and won’t change anything for anyone who possibly wanted to watch.

Re: Awards Season 2021
And, crucially, the scoop was not any nominated actors from this year but that cast members from nominated films wouldn’t be able to attend. Like I said, I think everyone actually nominated will have had to have gotten vaccinated for various events over the course of the season. So for all we know its, like, Toni Collette and Rebecca Ferguson, people who didn’t necessarily have to go around the world to promote their movies that were nominated.

I can think of no better olive branch than letting Joe Rogan and Khandi Alexander co-hostRibs wrote: Fri Feb 11, 2022 3:24 am I don’t actually think it’s about making sure any one person can go as sort of an olive branch, can’t-we-all-get-along, they’ll just be mad and not watch even more if we don’t let people come who didn’t get the shot endeavour

Re: Awards Season 2021
I would be surprised to see Anthony Hopkins (84) or Youn Yuh-jung (74) attending even if there were a vaccine mandate. Elderly people traveling internationally to a crowded event just to read off some names and hand someone a statuette?

I much prefer having a host to ground the ceremony, but I fear who will be chosen to help with whatever targeted demographics of viewership the Oscars have their sights on roping in…

I assume if they can get it they’ll do the Steven Martin Short Gomez trio.

Re: Awards Season 2021
I think Martin nixed that idea because they have a show that night already, plus if you invite those three you invite them to host together, not separately apart
