I don’t know what could be a spoiler for Petite Maman that isn’t readily obvious from the premise, or even a poor assumption of what that title means in English

That's true, but it's still a film best entered as blind as possible

How does Licorice Pizza win Best Film but fail to be recognized in (either) Top Ten of the year?yoloswegmaster wrote: Thu Dec 02, 2021 8:18 pm National Board of Review Winners + Top 10 Films of the Year

I haven’t seen the movie and don’t know the spoiler in question, but little mama is a pretty common term of endearment across languages with no additional meaning to it.MongooseCmr wrote: Thu Dec 02, 2021 7:27 pm I don’t know what could be a spoiler for Petite Maman that isn’t readily obvious from the premise, or even a poor assumption of what that title means in English

Re: Awards Season 2021
Because it is in the top ten, it’s not clearly stated but the top film list shown has 9 films as Licorice Pizza is actually one of the top ten but is not shown on that list. If that makes sense!therewillbeblus wrote:How does Licorice Pizza win Best Film but fail to be recognized in (either) Top Ten of the year?yoloswegmaster wrote: Thu Dec 02, 2021 8:18 pm National Board of Review Winners + Top 10 Films of the Year

Yep, strange to list nine films in a top ten- I didn't even bother counting

They’ve also got the Adapted and Original screenplay winners swapped, which made me do a double-take:

Could’ve sworn I had read something about this Macbeth person before this year.

I know the National Board of Review isn't a huge Oscar precursor, but definitely hope the Red Rocket nom leads to a path to the Oscars (likewise Farhadi for Screenplay and PTA beating Belfast). Hinds definitely looks good in terms of Oscar chances, and he was my favorite part of Belfast, so I'm happy.

With this fantastic writing accolade, he might get cocky and next do an adaptation of Borges' Pierre Menard.DarkImbecile wrote: Thu Dec 02, 2021 8:46 pm They’ve also got the Adapted and Original screenplay winners swapped, which made me do a double-take:

Re: Awards Season 2021
It'll be a good season if Campion and Anderson are the big winners, but gosh do I fail to understand what anyone likes about Kathryn Hunter in the Coen. The Actress pick is one of the most blatant examples of "give it to the contender we want most at the gala" I can recall.

Pleasantly surprised to see Drive My Car take Best Film. I ranked my list like everyone else but honestly ranking the top 3 was negligible - Drive My Car was on par with Memoria and Days.

Re: Awards Season 2021
My first thought when I glanced through that list was "weren't there better movies than this?" only to realize most of what I had in mind weren't American or British. But even then, I would have preferred more nominations for Passing and the absent C'mon C'mon and The Card Counter along with Mills, Schrader and most of their cast over many of those nominees.

Re: Awards Season 2021
The C'mon C'mon snubs for the two key supporting parts are unfortunate and hopefully not reflective of Oscar picks, though the most puzzling is the absence of Bradley Cooper for Licorice Pizza, which I expect to be a shoe-in nom (and deservedly so- let us return to days of rewarding minimal screentime scene-stealers!) Giving two noms to Belfast in that latter category makes it all the worse

Although I haven't seen it, the lack of The Worst Person in the World in Non English-Language is confusing. Unless its qualifying run didn't count for the Globes?

I used to think Worst Person was the frontrunner for the Oscar, but it actually looks like Drive My Car is the film to most consistently show up at award bodies so far.soundchaser wrote: Mon Dec 13, 2021 6:37 pm Although I haven't seen it, the lack of The Worst Person in the World in Non English-Language is confusing. The Globes like to over-nominate musicals, so I would've loved to see Mike Faist, my favorite performance in the wonderful new WSS, get in

Oh, and here are the very similar Critics Choice nominations. Cage is a nice enough surprise but the fact that Simon Rex can't even get in here (or GG Comedy/Musical) is disappointing

Re: Awards Season 2021
Yeah I'd love to see Cage get a left-field nom for Pig, but in ain't happening- though Adam Arkin's perf is even more deserving (but far less likely) at nabbing a supporting actor nom for selling the perversity of the material-tone relationship with sincerity. I'm still gobsmacked they were able to pull that off in the final act, and it's all riding on Arkin

Paul Schrader’s top 10 of the year, with the #1 you’d expect and one really disappointing choice:
